Food Allergy

Sesame allergy

Hello. A little about me. I have two boys, 3 and 1. The 3 year old was diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he was 1. His reactions are generally mild and his Ige #s have been going down by 1/2 each year, so we are thankful for that.

Recently he ate some hummus and experienced severe swelling and stomach upset. He did test positive for sesame on the skin prick test, waiting on blood results.

Any fellow sesame allergy moms? I know it's rare but growing. Thanks!

Re: Sesame allergy

  • DS has a sesame allergy. We discovered his allergy at 8m of age and confirmed that it was sesame at almost 12m.

    I'm sorry. :(
    It's a tough one.

  • Reese used to have a sesame seed allergy, but thankful outgrew it. Honestly? It was the hardest allergy to avoid since it doesn't have to be labeled on products in the US. (She was also allergic to almond, eggs and peanuts)

@fancynewbeesly‌ I'm so happy to hear she outgrew it. Praying for the same here! I'm finding the out the same thing about sesame. We were told that sesame oil is so refined that we really just have to worry about the seeds (buns, tahini). That the protein had been refined out like peanut oil. At least in my sons case, he can have stuff cooked with peanut oil (chick fil a, fried thanksgiving turkey, etc).

  • I'm surprised about the sesame oil. We were told to avoid everything with sesame, but my son's skin test came back more severe at 2y than it did at 1y. His allergist said it's a persistent allergy; so much so that she wants to forego the annual testing and only test him every 2-3 years as she doesn't expect him to outgrow it.
I'm glad your daughter outgrew it @fancynewbeesly!
