Another would you rather work schedule question

Having a debate with my coworker about this- Would you rather work Monday- Friday 8-5 with a 45 min commute each way, BUT, you would be able to WFH two times a week (tues and thurs) Or would you rather work 8-5 Monday- Thursday with a 2 minute commute each way and have a half day on Friday (out by noon)? She says the first, I say the second.
* In case anyone is wondering, my username did change as the info may have been identifying. My pic is still that same though :)

Re: Another would you rather work schedule question

  • Definitely the second. The 45 minute commute each way 3 days a week would be a killer for me.

  • 100% #2.  If the commute was the same I'd have a harder time picking.

  • Definitely the 2nd.  My work from home motivation comes from my commute, so if it was only 2 minutes, I wouldn't care about working from home.
  • Definitely #2. I LOATHE a commute longer than 15-20 minutes

  • I'd have to go with the second too. My commute time now is 40 minutes in the morning and again in the evening and it is very draining. I can't wait for DS to start at the new center next week, when my commute time will be less than 15 minutes.

  • Washington DC traffic sucks.  It can take you an hour to go 8 miles.  I vote short commute.

  • I think the second option is definitely the best of the two situations.  However, I have a 45 commute and I really don't mind it.  I take the train, which I think makes a big difference vs. driving.  Some people think I am crazy when I say this, but I consider it my "me" time.  I listen to my music, read my book, or just stare out the window and space out.  It is a great way to decompress between work and home.

2nd. I also LOATHE long commutes.  While I love WFH one day a week, I'd rather have a 2 min commute than 45.

I currently do the second but my commute is 7 minutes from house to work and about the same from preschool to work. I would keep that one.

The first is still almost a 6 hour commute (there and back) per week. Plus, I know where I work even if you are working from home, you are supposed to be working from home and not relaxing or doing non-job related tasks. Our office has been known to send someone to do a random check and if you are not there when you are supposed to be and you didn't let them know, it might mean your job.

  • #1 is me right now, except the commute is typically an hour each way.  I live 14 miles from my office, and it took me 1hr 15 mins to get into work the other day.  I love my 2 days from home.  Like PP's said, I get a TON done, not to mention the extra time with the kids.

But I vote #2, hands down.  The commute kills me, but it was a necessary evil in our minds.  Any closer and you sacrifice land, school systems, taxes, home size.  There are only 2 towns between us and the city limits, and the public schools in the city are not an option.  There aren't many opportunities for us outside the city.
  • #2. Long commutes are hell.

You all are putting fear into my heart. We are selling the house where I currently have a 10-15 min commute and DH has a 45 min commute, and moving to the next county over. I will have a 35-40 min commute and DH will have an 1.25 hr commute on average. Sigh, the joys of living in the DMV. :(

ETA we each do WFH 1 day a week though and DH is going to up his to 2 days.

May the Lord be with you.

  • The second one. I hate traffic! Also, daycare doesn't keep long enough hours for me to have a 9 hour work day and 1.5 hour total commute.

#2, hands down. I have a 45 minute commute and it sucks.

  • I've had long commutes all my life. I would love to have a short commute for awhile, and for me the benefit of working from home is not having to commute. So I vote #2.
  • Def #2. The commute is better and I don't really care to WFH.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

  • I definitely pick number 2.  I used to wfh two days a week, but I don't any longer because I missed out on too much.  And my commute is 1h15 each way, and it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
