Interesting article - SIDS and Back To Sleep

Came across this article today on my Facebook news feed. I thought it was interesting and just curious what others thought about it. I'm not sure what I think yet, but DS is currently sleeping happily on his back this evening :)

Re: Interesting article - SIDS and Back To Sleep

  • I like the article, it pretty much says what I've thought for years, only with numbers to back it up. I wasn't a huge fan of all the numbers about SIDS and then tossing in a lot of xyz has increased since back to sleep with no numbers to support that. C slept on her belly because she slept better that way. Charlie sleeps on his back because he sleeps better that way. I vote you put your baby to sleep in whatever position they are most comfortable in.

  • This is a very well written article but I can see how it can trigger fear in many mothers and cause them to question and doubt what they are doing with their babies. My baby sleeps very well when swaddled and laid on his back. Not sure how I would handle it if he preferred to sleep on his tummy since it has been so engrained in my mind that he MUST sleep on his back. The author is playing the devils advocate and presents some very bold and thought provoking information. I do believe SIDS requires more research but I think it's just important to be vigilant with out children and to a certain extent follow our instincts. Ultimately, I do not think that SIDS will ever just go away. It's sad and it's scary but it happens.

One of the important take aways for me from this article was the reinforcement to get a non toxic mattress that is greenguard certified.  It is so important for the air the babies breathe to be free from the off gassing that occurs from mattresses that have chemicals to make them flame retardant or paint from furniture made in other countries.  I found this website so helpful when choosing products.

I'm also glad for the reminder to keep blankets, bumpers & stuffed animals out of cribs.  I have a tendency to tuck a blanket around my baby when he is in the swing, but I'm rethinking that now.

  • A very good read. It was nice seeing that reassuring statistic that 99.88% of all babies survive infancy, since the fear of SIDS can be so consuming. I have a feeling my LOL will eventually be a stomach sleeper, as he really enjoys tummy time, and I too have been a stomach sleeper my whole life. I still put him to sleep on his back just to be safe.

  • I enjoyed this article too -- our older son was a tummy sleeper, and so is DS -- it's magic for babies with bad reflux.  The pediatrician said we have to do what we feel comfortable with and that's what we decided.  I think that's the true lesson of parenting.
