Toddler Cradle Cap?

So today I noticed some scaly patches on L's scalp. He's almost 16 months and had some cradle cap as a newborn so I'm thinking this is just a reoccurrence?? He has a ton of hair and we do wash it every other night but is that too much? I'm thinking I'm going to need to give in and get him a haircut soon. I'm pretty sure I did the baby oil and brush method last time and it worked. So I tried that again tonight but it's tough with all his hair! Anyone else's LO have a reoccurrence in toddlerhood? Thoughts? Advice? Thanks!

Re: Toddler Cradle Cap?

  • Right here!!!!! I was playing with A's hair two weeks ago and noticed it! It was a real WTF moment for me because I really was shocked! She has so much hair that I can only work on it while her hair is dry. I was able to scrape most of it off, although, she was not amused.

I *think* I read you can use dandruff shampoo to help clear it up(?) anyone know?

  • What kind of shampoo are you using? I would try something milder like Aveeno or Burt's bees and see if it clears up.

My 3 year old was getting dandruff from L'oreal kids, but I switched to Burt's bees and it went away.

  • DS1 gets it. I think it is just a matter of me missing some shampoo. When he was tiny, the pedi said we could use dandruff shampoo, but it isn't so bad.

  • DS2 had a mild case when he was an infant. DD never had it as an infant, but I noticed that they both had a little recently. I used dandruff shampoo on both of them once or twice, and made sure to comb through the flakes after baths as best as I could. It has cleared up for both of them.

  • Thanks ladies! I am going to pick up some different shampoo. We use J&J naturals now but thinking about it now the lotions and soaps always irritated his skin. Don't know why I didn't think it may do the same to his head. I used a soft toothbrush this morning to work through the patches and it helped so hopefully it will clear up soon. I know it doesn't hurt, he's fine and it's not a hygiene thing, but it totally grosses me out! Lol

  • We used head and shoulders on DS. You just have to be extra careful not get it in his eyes.

  • W is not a toddler, but the mustella for cradle cap foaming shampoo works WONDERS! He is 8 months now and we still use it. It cleared it up within 2 washes. We still use it because it smells good and leaves his hair really soft!
  • My 5 mo old has that now and my pedi said to use head and shoulders. So I am doing that on top of the baby oil.
