Daycare sick policy

What is the sick policy for LO's daycare (centers, home daycare, etc)? When are you expected to keep them home? Obviously with fevers, but what about colds or congestion?

Re: Daycare sick policy

  • We have to keep LO home with fevers and vomiting (not spit up obviously, more like stomach virus) but not colds or congestion unless they're really oozing fluid.

  • Keep home for just fevers and vomiting as well. If I had to keep him home for the congestion he got from the other kids at daycare, I'd be out of a job.

  • My daycare says they have to be home for "severe colds", whatever that means.  The thing that always kills me is that if they get sent home they can't come back for 24 hrs, so really you end up with two days of no child care.

  • I'm not sure about our center as there is no written rule. However, the rules for our school district are fever-free (without medicine) and/or no throwing up for 24 hours.

Severe colds to me is that the child cannot function is basically in la la land of congestion. So like major runny nose, awful sounding cough and lethargic/cranky.

If the child cannot keep up with the day, they should stay home. If they can deal, then they can attend DC.

However, I feel medicated does not give a pass for the child to attend, as the meds will wear off and DCP (at least in Canada) cannot administer OTC medication without a prescription and a signed form.
  • My LO goes to an in home lady. A lot of days it is just my son. If it is just a cold, she said she doesn't mind if he comes. If he is vomiting or really sick and she is watching another kid, he has to stay home.

At a daycare center: fevers over 101 they have to stay home and stay home until they're 24 hours fever free. They also have to stay home for contagious things like pink eye.

  • Mine says fever free without medication for 24 hours. Kids can go with colds/congestion.
