So my Swagger Wagon maybe saved our lives

*story time*

Back story: I was already having a shitteous week that included at least one emotional crying breakdown at work.

Friday night, we went to the park as we usually do. DH had to meet us there because he had to work late. An hour after getting there, it starts to rain "to beat the drum" as my grandmother would say, so everyone peaces out. I start up the mountain incline home, going slower than usual because of the dark and rain and the fact that I'm on a mountain - DD's car seat is on the driver side.

Out of absolutely no where, Deerzilla appears out of the woods on the right side and hurls itself at my car. All I remember is seeing it's eyes and then a THUD. All of the airbags on the right side of the car deployed, covering all the windows - so no glass was broken and the car slowed itself to a stop and went into some "Safety Mode" and the hazard lights came on themselves, which is great because at that point I was still trying to process WTAF just happened.

My face was mostly this:

DD didn't budge (thanks, sturdy car seat) and was fine until I started bawling so then of course she started crying.

Thankfully, since DH drove separately, he was right behind us and we were able to get in his care safely. I wanted to see the damage to the car, but it was dark and wet and I was too afraid to see the dumb deer in any pain. (I later learned that the thing parkoured down the side of my car and kept on it's merry way - those things are solid).

Anywhoo, all of this to say I'm grateful for the Volvo and felt completely safe in that tank - just emotionally freaked. We had been talking about downgrading vehicles soon to save $, but I think if we do, I'll just go get an older one.

*Edit* Here's what Bambi did to the front, right of the car

  • Oh man, I'm so sorry and glad everyone is ok. Volvos are definitely safe, mine prevented me from serious injuries in high school!

  • I am glad you are OK and made it home safe. Deer do some odd things and running into/in front of cars is scary stuff.
  • @BunkinMama seriously three seconds after it happened I thought of your siggy (I think that means I Bump too much?) I was wishing Deerzilla had half the skills of yours.

  • I do believe I would have shit my pants.

Don't forget to replace your car seat before your DD rides in it again but if you go through insurance they may cover a replacement :)

  • Thank God you guys are okay!  How scary!  I used to work for a Volvo dealership and people would send us pics all the time of a completely twisted smoking heap of metal that used to be their car, and they would be standing unharmed next to it.

Yeah Team Volvo Safety. But this is what I just told my friend:

  • Gosh, that must have been scary, esp with your DD in the car. Glad the car protected you both. I had a Deerzilla incident a couple years ago and it was terrifying but I was alone.
