Boost for nutritional support

Just curious if anybody else drinks boost or ensure while pregnant? I bought some boost plus a while ago because I was having an aversion to all meat and fish which is now thankfully resolving. I forgot to ask if it was ok with my midwifes. My hubby just left for his annual field exercise today and I really have a hard time eating enough while he's gone because it's just me. So I might be seeking some more boost. I have an appt on Thursday so I'll make sure to ask about it then. I don't rely on it. I just more keep it as a backup if I haven't gotten to the grocery store or it's been a long time since I've had a meal and can't figure out what to eat!

Re: Boost for nutritional support

  • That's a good idea. I did have a few smoothies with protein powder and it made my stomach upset. But it's been awhile I should prob try that again over boost!

  • I agree with Wildflower. I'd say your better off with a fruit smoothie with protein powder or shake/smoothie with a nut butter protein source. Less additives, sugar and artificial ingredients. And cheaper too :)

I went through several powders that hurt my stomach now that worked pre- pregnancy and my pregnancy nutritionist told me to try the whole foods 365 vanilla whey powder. Which has been working well and doesn't hurt. That with fruit, Greek yogurt and chia seeds is my big protein influx for the day. Hope that helps!
  • I'm going to second (third? Fourth?) making your own smoothies with protein powder. I make my own smoothie every morning and it's so delicious. I also add spinach so that I get extra greens and iron. My new favourite things to add are hemp hearts (they have a lot of protein) and chia seeds (fibre!). There's lots of smoothie recipes online if you're struggling.

I find Boost and Ensure type drinks taste terrible after you've made your own. Good luck!
  • Do be careful with the super sugary drinks like ensure. Yeah, they've got protein and vitamins, but they also have a lot of sugar and crap you don't need. My midwife recommended getting a protein powder and making my own smoothies. I got one that is NOT soy based because soy mimics estrogen and I figured that I didn't need any extra hormonal influences right now. I put fruit, milk, greek yogurt, protein powder, and ice in the blender. I can make a smoothie that has about 30 grams of protein in just a few minutes.

Obviously that does take more work and ingredients than just straight boost or ensure. You have a bit more control over what you're putting in your body, though.
I almost make the same but instead of the protein powder i use Peanut Butter and Banana as the fruit...so yummy and better than Ensure or boost and it really does take mins.
