Help! (Cooking)

I'm making tikka masala. Do I make brown rice or try cauliflower rice? How does everyone make cauliflower rice?

Re: Help! (Cooking)

  • I don't really like cauliflower rice as a rice substitute. I like it in things, but not like that where the food goes over it.

  • You're exactly right.
I use it in stuffed bell peppers, cabbage rolls, Chinese fried rice.

  • I bet Biryani would be really good with cauliflower rice.  We love Indian food at our house :)

  • To be fair to my food ignorance, though, I have no idea what tikka masala is :)
This makes me sad.  It is so very delicious.

  • FWIW, I like cauliflower rice with Tikka Masala, but it is more liquidy.  The cauliflower doesn't soak up the sauce like regular rice.
  • Nobody cares what you like Stoney.

  • I also don't know what tikki masala is but I made cauliflower rice with my food processor and it was delicious. It just does have a cauliflower taste so I find it too strong of a flavour to mix with certain things. Brown rice is awesome though so I would probably go with that in most recipes.

Tikka Masala is an Indian dish. (Actually it's an English adaptation of an Indian food but that's a different show)  Tikka masala usually has a tomato cream sauce and lots of yummy Indian spices, but it's relatively low on the hot spices.  My 1 year old LOVES it.
If you ever want to try it, you can usually find "simmer sauce" in the ethnic food aisle of your supermarket.
Biryani is a different Indian dish, a bit similar to rice pilaf.  You cook the rice (or cauliflower) in the sauce that you cook your meat or veg in.
We eat a lot of Indian food in our house lol.

The PW recipe for Tikka Masala was relatively easy to follow.  I didn't have time to broil the chicken, so I ended up throwing everything in the slow cooker.  It turned out okay.  Next time if I want to do that I'll probably start in a saute pan and move everything to the slow cooker on low for a few hours before adding the cream.
