Cranberry pills

I have had constant UTI's this pregnancy and just got ANOTHER one!! I have been drinking so much water and peeing constantly, trying to make my bladder empty completely, wearing cotton underwear etc... Has anyone taken cranberry pills? Did it help keep them at bay? I so don't want to be on antibiotics for the rest of my pregnancy and don't want to be in constant fear it'll spread to my kidneys (happened twice). Willing to try anything!

Re: Cranberry pills

  • I used to get them a lot in college and cranberry pills helped. The only thing I didn't like about them was that they turned my pee orange (very unsettling for an 18 year old lol). Since I've been pregnant I've had trouble swallowing pills so I've been drinking at least two glasses of CranApple juice a day. I don't like the taste of straight cranberry juice so the added apple flavor makes it easier to swallow. A good friend of mine did take them while pregnant and she never had a problem with UTIs.

  • Just a heads up, if you already have a uti, its not a good idea to drink the juice, my doctor said it has too much sugar and makes things worse, I think that its more of preventative. I think the pills have much less sugar than juice.

Very true ^ cranberry pills and juice are preventative. You shouldn't drink/take either one until after your doctor confirms that your UTI is gone.

  • I take cranberry pills and they definitely help. I have been taking them for about three years and I haven't had another UTI. If you drink cranberry juice, make sure it's pure cranberry juice (the kind you have to dilute). You can find it at Trader Joe's. Most of the cranberry juice at the grocery store either has too much sugar (cranberry cocktail) or they cut it with apple juice .

  • I had the same problem in my pregnancy as well. I talked to my midwife about cranberry tablets. She said they work great because they coat your bladder which prevent the bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. She also said, vitamin C pills as well. vitamin C makes the bladder more acidic and that the bacteria can't thrive in that kind of environment. Sugar in juices aren't good. The tables are the way to go.

    TMI!!!
She said peeing and having a glass of water before sex and peeing right after is very important. She said that can make a huge difference.
  • I'm not sure but a friend recently told me she ate a lot of pineapple with a UTI and it helped clear it up.

I think you should definitely talk to your doctor and ask for an antibiotic to clear this UTI up, and then ask if there are any preventative measures you can take to avoid UTI's the rest of the pregnancy.

  • I use to get them constantly and now take cranberry pill daily and rarely get them. If doing cranberry juice have to make sure a low sugar (doesn't taste great). Pineapple and pineapple juice actually do help once have one or if think getting one. Pineapple helps with healing so really good after surgery and other things too. Best thing though is lots of water to avoid spreading to kidneys and antibiotics.
  • I used to get UTI's constantly, I mean all.the.damn.time. I tried every home remedy available, peed before and after sex, washed before and after sex, it made no difference, I was plagued with them. My GYN finally put me on a standing order of antibiotics, and I took an antibiotic after sex, every time. After 6 months of this, the UTI's went away and never came back. She believes I had a constant, low level UTI that was being flared up by sex and taking baths.

Thanks for the tips! I'll ask my OB this week when I see her but I went ahead and just ordered a big bottle. I am currently on an antibiotic (after I was hospitalized with the kidney infection I am not taking any chances!). I didn't know you weren't supposed to start taking them until it was clear. Good to know! I'm thinking about cutting most of the sugar out of my system to see if that will help too. What's strange is that I never got one before, even with my first pregnancy and they have been non stop with this one! Thanks again!
