High-Risk Pregnancy

Doc discontinued my 17P early - anyone else?

Hi- I'm a first time poster, but hoping to hear some other people's stories if they've ever been in the same boat as me. Brief history- I had my first child at 24w4d due to PTL most likely brought on by infection. He's doing great today, and we are thankful for that blessing every day :). I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant with #2, and was taking 17P until this week. I've been developing an allergic reaction that has grown progressively worse- going from mild local reactions to more severe local reactions and finally this week to a non life threatening systemic reaction. My Alere nurse told me that if I continue getting them, I need to also get an epi pen. Benadryl, etc are not working. I've been discussing with my doc for several weeks, but after this last reaction, she strongly recommended that I discontinue them. Her rationale was that (a) if infection caused my first PTL, the chances of that happening again are extremely low and if it did happen again, progesterone would not prevent the labor; (b) my cervix is still nice and strong and closed; and (c) anaphylaxis and the administration of epinephrine are also quite dangerous for the baby in utero. I've also had allergic reactions to the PIO in sesame oil in the past, so that's not an option. Finally getting to my question (sorry), has anyone ever had to stop 17P early and still carried until close to their due date? I appreciate all insight and suggestions as I try to make this incredibly difficult decision.

  • I was in p17 but didn't have to stop. It sounds like the doc has good reasons to stop you early. Does your alere nurse see you every week? If so can you see if you can continue seeing the nurse but not getting the shots. My alere nurse is the one who caught my ptl and sent me to l&d to get my contractions stopped. I wasn't feeling contractions and didn't have a Ob appt for a couple more days.

  • I didn't take the shots but have been on progesterone suppositories for both pregnancies for PTL and IC ...maybe ask if that is an option to replace the shot?

  • Thank you both for your replies! My Alere nurse won't come to my house unless my doc orders a Rx through them, but my doc said I can start coming in weekly to see her if I want to. She's also of the opinion that the supps are warranted for women with IC or shortening cervix, but since I don't have either of those issues, she doesn't feel they're appropriate for me. I've decided to follow her recommendation and stop the shots. Tomorrow will be my first missed shot at 30 weeks. I'll update later to let people know my outcome.
  • Update for those interested- I delivered a healthy baby girl at 38w4d after discontinuing 17P at 29 weeks. Best of luck to all you high risk ladies!!
