Baby Names

Thoughts and Opinions Please

So DH and I might be weird but we like to stay after movies so we can watch the credits. Often we point out names we like as we see them scrolling. It's been a "game" we've played for years. Now that we're pregnant, it's less game and more looking for potential baby names. Anyway, we just saw "The Giver" and we both kind of like the name Odeya (first name of one of the actresses). I think we like it enough to put it on our short list but I'm just curious- what is the general opinion about that name? Do other people think it's weird or super unusual? We're into less common names, but I don't want to pick something that's so out there that it causes problems or odd reactions or something for my daughter.) It's Hebrew meaning "Thank God" or "Ode to God". What do you think? Odeya- yay or nay?

  • Nay. It's just NMS

  • If you're going for unusual, it's not bad. It sounds pretty but you will have to spell it out a lot and maybe explain where you heard it/if there's a meaning behind it etc etc. It shouldn't cause a negative reaction, though IMO. The meaning doesn't bother me at all, it's actually kind of beautiful. I tend to prefer less common but recognizable names, though.
  • I don't hate it but there are much nicer names out there.

  • How is it pronounced? No one pronunciation is jumping out at me as more probable, and one of the ones I thought it might be is OH-dee-yah, which sounds a bit too similar to odious to me. Hoping it's something more like oh-DAY-ah?

  • PS that girl is flat out gorgeous though... that alone might slightly sway me towards the name. ;)

  • @crabigator - I was leaning toward the oh-DAY-ah pronunciation. I hadn't even thought of oh-dee-yah. Definitely something to consider in terms of calling attendance at school for new teachers and substitutes (my mom is a substitute and I've heard some of the crazy names she's had to decipher, so it should cross my mind more often when considering names). Thanks!

@loopybaby - Most of the names on our list are not common but definitely recognizable. So I'm with you on that. This name just kinda stuck out to us so I thought I'd try to find out if we're crazy to like it or if it could be a cute contender. Thank you for your thoughts! They were very helpful. =)

(Also, I don't normally care much about what a name means, but I thought someone might ask so I included it in my original post. We are religious so it doesn't bother us, but I wouldn't pick it over something else simply because of it's religious meaning.)

  • The sound is nice. Doesn't fit my naming style at all. I personally think it would be better for a family that speaks Hebrew and identifies as Jewish. I'm sure that would not bother many people here though.

  • Don't like it and wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Sorry.

It's very pretty, and I like the meaning. I don't think that it's "too out there." It seems fairly straight forward to me. I like the oh-day-uh pronunciation.

  • Definitely like the oh-day-ah. Went to school with a girl with that name and she was pretty awesome :)
