Aging placenta

I was diagnosed by my perinatologist at 32 weeks with aging placenta. Have to have nst 2x a week and see him in 2 weeks but possibly will need to deliver early due to IUGR. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Aging placenta

  • Lost twins at 20 weeks due to SIUGR caused by placental insufficiency. Just do whatever they say and count yourself it was diagnosed after V Day.

  • I delivered DS early at 37 weeks because he was IUGR. They suspected placental insufficiency but never determined the cause of his IUGR. He was born 100% healthy and 5lbs 1oz. :)

He was diagnosed IUGR at 24 weeks, and I had a weekly ultrasound to monitor cord blood flow and growth, and a weekly NST to monitor his heart rate.

FX that baby can stay in as long as possible!! Have they given you a time frame or any idea of what to expect? T&Ps for you.

  • Thank you!! I have to go back in 2 weeks to perinatologist and nst 2x/week and kick counts 2x/day. Just really worried.
  • I'm really sorry!! I'm following all directions but still very nervous.
  • I delivered DS at 28w due to this. It turns out I had a blood clotting disorder that I did not know about.

  • What were your symptoms of aging placenta?? I have hypertension and am having weekly sono/ nst. Growth % was 57% then last week dropped to 42%. My ob said he's average size and not to worry. It's hard to not worry! He already wants to induce at least a week early to avoid b/p problems. And everyone that asks about my pregnancy comments about how small I look for 32 weeks. Like I said its hard to not spend your days worrying!

42% does not qualify as IUGR; there aren't really outward symptoms of an aging placenta, or a placental malfunction; only in some cases where there is an abruption or major detachment.

42% is a great size. Totally normal. And they go back and forth at this point because of growth spurts. In the second half of pregnancy, ultrasounds have to be done very frequently to get a true idea of baby's size, because they grow at their own unique rates, and there's no knowing whether they've just had a growth spurt or are about to have one without very frequent checks. That's one reason why size predictions at this stage in the game are not very easy.

Try to relax. If your doctor isn't worried about baby's growth, you shouldn't be either.

I have had no symptoms and wasn't aware until a visit with the perinatologist. I'm also very worried!! All I can do is monitor fetal movement and pray everything works out. Good luck mama!

How did the find the disorder? I don't have any pre existing conditions or gd or pre e and not a smoker. Only thing I could think of was problems with utis this preg.

There are certain blood tests for clotting disorders, outside the common ones there are ANA tests, anti-cardiolipin, etc.

A faulty placenta does not imply clotting disorder either. The placenta is created from the same cells that create the fetus and is an extremely interesting structure. Sometimes areas malfunction with no rhyme or reasob, they also know it's happening because of the IUGR.
