High-Risk Pregnancy

???s for those with IC and PTL

Hi all! I'm almost 27 weeks, and had a preventative cerclage placed at 14 weeks. I get a cervical check every 2 weeks, and its always been very long; ranging from 4.5-5 sometimes even close to 6. I have had contractions off and on since the cerclage, no consistency though. I'm on 17P as well. My question is, for those of you who are/have also experienced PTL, at what point do you go to L&D with the contractions? Mine are so inconsistent right now, but there are occasions that I will have a bout of very intense, very consistent ones. Like a couple nights ago, I hadn't drank a lot of water throughout the day and in the afternoon/evening I was having some mild-moderate contractions that were every 40-45 mins apart. I just laid down for the entire afternoon and evening and drank lots of water. They seemed to calm down towards the end of the evening so I went to sleep around 11pm and didn't notice any throughout the night except when I woke up to go to the bathroom. Now, they're for the most part still pretty inconsistent. There's no pattern, they just come and go at random. BUT, they are certainly more intense now. I am feeling pain with them now, whereas before no pain was associated. SO, I am wondering at what point do I need to go to hosp? Since they're not consistent, it should be fine for now right? I do have another checkup on Monday morning, so of course I'll know what my cervix looks like and will ask the doc about it. Just curious about your experiences/opinions. Thanks, and have a blessed day everyone!

Re: ???s for those with IC and PTL

  • I wouldn't worry if they stay 40-45 minutes apart. I went to L&D when mine were coming 5-10 minutes apart for hours after laying down and chugging water and then have been sent for monitoring after finding cervical change at one of my OB appointments at 31 weeks.  If you are ever concerned I would call your OB and see what they recommend. I don't know if your guidelines are different because of your cerclage.  I would also ask for specific guidelines on when you should call L&D for contraction.s Good luck!

  • With my second pregnancy my doc told me if I had 4 or more contractions in an hour to call .. u should ask your doc about what u should do or when u should call ..
  • Thanks so much for the replies! I had a cervical check a week and a half ago and was measuring great, almost 5cm so no concerns. I'm actually between OB's at the moment, so its really frustrating...long story. Anyway.. last night I had contractions 5-10 mins apart for right at 2 hours. I laid down and drank lots of water. They seemed to calm down in intensity and slowly tapered off so I didn't go in. I didn't have any pain or pelvic pressure, no change in discharge either. If I had those I would have went in. Its so incredibly hard to know when to go in, and when to just wait it out and let it pass. I have an appnt on Monday with a new Dr for an ultrasound not sure if they'll do a cervical check or not. This is just crazy. Thanks again for your replies!

  • I measured between 3-3.6cm my entire pregnancy. No other issues til the week after my babyshower @ 31 weeks when I was admitted with contractions every 4 min that progressed to every 2 min before I was put on magnesium and it stopped it. They attribute it mostly to dehydration and being so busy the week of my shower do make sure you keep up with your fluid intake. During that first admission my cervix shortened to 0.6 cm and 80% effaced! I have been On bedrest, p17 and procardia since and have had continuous contractions and 2 additional hospital admissions. Luckily, I will be 36 weeks in 2 days and my cerclage will come out. I am grateful to have made it this far but very stressful despite having NO issues (other than planned cerclage at 13 weeks) throughout the first 3/4 of my pregnancy.
