Waxing question...

Question for all of you waxers out there... I've always just shaved down there. I can go by feel, but it is getting harder to do a decent job. I was thinking about getting a Brazilian wax, but I saw on a medical show that you can actually get an STD from the wax (double dipping in the same wax for everyone). Any thoughts?

I got a Brazilian today and aside from being uncomfortable all day, I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear on STDs. I've actually been getting them for years and have had no problems. I did notice that I was sore all day afterwards when usually recovery is much faster

  • I agree that you're sore for the day after, which was never the case before pregnancy.  So expect that.  Also, if you've never waxed before, I might suggest just doing a bikini wax to start (they do a great job of making it look very neat and can even just leave a "landing strip" if that's what you'd want).  Brazilian is tough the first time, IMHO.

As far as STD's (and other infections for that matter), make sure they are not "double dipping."  You can ask when you make the appointment.  I do think it's unsanitary if they are using the same stick over and over again.  They should be using a new stick every time they dip into the wax.

  • I agree with the other reply, you should ask when you go to ensure there's no double-dipping. If you choose a reputable place, it's very unlikely they double dip. I've been getting Brazilian waxes for years and highly recommend doing them. Obviously it's painful, but not unbearable.
  • Agree with the no double dipping. I could see how STDs would spread if they were doing that.

  • I just got one yesterday and it's so worth it! I would just make sure you go to a nice spa and you'll definitely be fine. I've been getting them for years and my gyno/OB is aware and never mentioned any concerns!

I second this, as long as the person doing the wax doesn't double dip you're good.  I went to a place that did and immediately stopped her and got a refund (shady groupon).  disgusting!

  • Okay, so I have a question I want to add to this.  I've never had a bikini wax or a brazillian wax, but I want to.  Do you have to trim the hair down before you go to make it easier to come off?  Or can you just go in there full bush and let them do the work?   Also, I do shave a bit around my bikini line. Do I need to let that grow out a little first before getting the wax?
  • @designchica I did not trim and I hadn't groomed in at least a month, it was long. I would let the bikini line grow out a little bit becase the shorter the hair, the more painful it can be. If there's nothing for the wax to grab it will grab to skin, I'd rather it be hair! FYI after 24 hours I'm still a little sore but MUCH better than I was yesterday. I recommend choosing a day where you don't have a lot of walking to do.

  • Like other pp have said, you might be a little sore if you haven't had a wax before. I don't know any places that would double dip the stick, they should be using a different stick every single time.

You do have to wait 7-10 days since last shave for hair to grow long enough to stick to the wax.

  • Agreed waxing is great, and they should be using a different stick each time they dip.  You see them dip and wipe on you they should turn and throw it immediately in the trash.

  • Thank you all! I might just do it. I hate shaving, but I hate being hairy more.
  • I just went for the first time today. I normally shave everything, so I'd been letting things grow (read: I had no other choice because I can't see past my belly anymore).

I went to a chain called European Wax Center. It was a bit painful in the moment, but I'm not sore at all now (not sure if I might be later). The definitely used a new stick each time and I'm so glad I went!

  • My only thing to add is that if you have sensitive skin, be careful. I got a full wax (everything but the butt hole) before my wedding at European Wax Center. It hurt a lot, but they were so nice and professional. The lady didn't say a word when I started laughing hysterically bc it hurt so badly and she only did one strip!

However, I broke out all over my crotch after and my skin was super red and puffy. It wasn't the fault of the waxer, just I had a reaction to whatever they used. Thankfully, all was in working order by my wedding night! I can't imagine what my preggo skin would do, especially since I am breaking out every where else right now.

  • Just waxed today and boy do I feel better! Couldn't see not keeping it up... It's so much easier in the long run.
  • Oh... I do have sensitive skin. That is scary. :-P
  • I'm not a waxer I have far to sensitive skin and really am not sure I could deal with the pain. But nair for sensitive skin does the job very well and you don't need to see to do it.. I normally just lay on a towel on the bed and go by feel and watch the clock. I let it sit for 3-4 minutes and then to the shower with a wash cloth I go and I'm always very pleased with the result and it's painless and far less expensive. Just my two cents. :-)

  • More upscale salons offer different types of waxes to use. There is a blue one that is MUCH better for the pain/sensitive skin issues. They put that wax on, it gets less goopy, no paper is used on top they just take it off on its own. I don't know what it's called off the top of my head but if you mention you have sensitive skin they should offer the other wax. It may be more $$
