Neurontin/Gabapentin

I went to my neurology follow-up after they hospitalized me last month and did a lumbar puncture/MRI. They said the still don't know quite what's wrong with me but prescribed me Neurontin 600mg 3x a day. They said it's safe to take while pregnant, though no medication can be considered 100% safe. Anyone ever taken this medication, pregnant or not? I've read some of the side effects and I'd like to know what to expect before I start taking it tomorrow.

@whoaitsnikki‌ Sorry, I can't help (I came into this thread thinking "those are funny words" and had no idea what they were) but I hope these work for you. I hate taking any medications while pregnant, but I know my doctors are looking out for me. I'm sorry this is another stress for you right now.

@FhSTAR81 I haven't picked them up yet. I was super tired after having been in the clinic for 3 1/2 hours today so I had DH drop it off and I came home. I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow so I will let you know what I get.

@minibean16 I hate taking anything right now too! I was taking Esgic for headaches and eye pain (That may be associated with an inflamed optic nerve, IF that's what's wrong with me) but I felt better about taking it because an OB at the women's and children's hospital here assured me that it was ok. I'm very hopeful that this will help and I can at least remove some of the stress from this from my life and focus on the next steps in caring for our baby.

600 mg is normally a tablet. It is ok to take especially since you are well supervised by your doctor. however be very cautious taking other meds with it. when you pick it up discuss with the pharmacist if on other medications. also be careful who knows you have it because it can be abused, some of us pharmacies treat it as a control. We have seen many innocentpeople have it stolen for abuse purpose since they had no idea.

My husband had terrible side effects with it and had to stop taking it, which was strange because he hardly ever has issues with any side effects with other medication. Maybe it interacted with something else he was taking, I don't know, but he had vision disturbances, headaches, short term memory loss, drowsiness, insomnia... Not pretty. He stayed on it for several weeks to see if the effects would lessen as his body became accustomed to it, but the memory loss and headaches were especially relentless. My doctor suggested at one point that I try it, but I never did so I'm no help personally.

I'm typically on it for back pain. I took myself off it as it is a pretty strong drug and it wasn't worth the worry for me. Of course, I'm not taking any drugs this pregnancy as I don't want anything effecting my baby. So you have to have to go by your own comfort ability. The fact that you're even asking shows you are at least a little uncomfortable with taking it.

Thank you guys. DH and I discussed it last night and I'm going to try it out but if I have any uncomfortable side effects I'm going to stop taking it as soon as I see them. Some of the side effects are actually things I've been having problems with so I hope they don't get worse. I appreciate all of your help!

I know there is research happening now to see how gabapentin can help women with hg, so it's been decided that it's safe enough to use in women in trials.

Also, my husband took it for a while and he is normally super prone to side effects, and I don't remember him mentioning any bad ones. I hope you don't experience any side effects that compound your normal symptoms. Good luck to you!

I took my first dose today around 4. So far I have no problem with my normal symptoms. I do feel a little drowsy/loopy but not too bad. Hopefully this is the one for me!
