School-Aged Children

Starting kindergarten = nervous (me)

Ok so this is a little silly but... my daughter is starting kindergarten in a little over a week - exciting! We were talking about it and she said she is excited but is going to be shy the first week - totally normal - I get it. No other issues with her, How do I get over being nervous?!?! She has been in daycare for the past 5 years and done 1/2 day of school for the past 2 years at the daycare. I just can't seem to get the knots/butterflies/whatever out of my tummy! Told ya it was silly :)

  • It is an adjustment for sure.  My twins went to daycare also where I got a daily report and meals and activities.  Parent/teacher conferences are usually a bit after school begins so that helped me.  Good luck to you both!

  • I think it is normal to be nervous.  I was too!  I felt better after the first week for sure.  She came home full of smiles every day and that put me at ease.  Also, our school has Curriculum Night the 3rd week of school.  I liked getting to know the teacher, how the classroom was run, and what the kids would be learning.

  • I was really nervous, too. I'm a little less nervous this year. We only had half-day kindie, so this is DD's first experience with full days. Good luck!
  • That's totally normal. My oldest started high school this year and I was just as nervous as he was on his first day!! Just try not to show your child how nervous you are because then she'll think there's something to be scared about.
  • Nah -- I think it's normal for you to be nervous.  You just want everything to go right for your child.

I'm always way more uptight about big changes in my kids' lives than they are.  I just try to hide it and play it cool.

Mermaid, I didn't realize you have a teenager as well.  My DD will be a freshman in hs this year too.  She had her orientation this week.  She's really excited for school to start Monday, even though she's dreading getting up early in the morning again.

Yes, I don't even believe it myself when I tell people I have a child in high school.  Where did the time go!!!

  • Same boat. I'm totally nervous. I think I would be fine with half-day but we have full. It's bus (I never had to take a bus), 20 minute lunch, all day. Ugh!

  • Hi -- new here and feeling exactly the same! DS starts on Tuesday and is so excited. On the other hand, I am nervous about full day K, get his tail out of bed early, lunchtime, and whatever other antics await us. He has done 1/2 day pre school and did lunch bunch on occasion but K seems so "big kid".
