Cloth Diapering

Hooray for fluff!

Hello CD board,

I've posted here a couple times asking some questions back when I was still considering CD'ing.  I'm proud to say that we have a stash now and I'm super excited about getting to use it pretty soon!

Is it weird to be so excited about diapers?

I was wondering if you ladies with more experience could help me out with a few questions.

1.  Do I really need a newborn sized stash or have any of you had good luck with one size and prefolds on newborns?

2. What do I all still need to have?  We currently have the following 3 BestBottom covers with 6 inserts (I was planning on using some prefolds with these), 4 or 5 Thirsties size one covers and 24 prefolds, 2 snappis, 2 large wet bags, 1 medium wet bag for the diaper bag
We are so excited to grow our family!

  • 1- you can choose to skip the newborn stageor you vcould use newborn prefolds with some bummis or thirsties covers. One sized diapers won't fit a newborn though, their legs are to skinny.

2- I'm not really all that great with stash recommendations so I'll let someone else take that.

  • The Thirsties size one covers will likely fit a newborn, or close to it. What size are your prefolds? Newborn prefolds fit little babies best, but back in our parents' days they only had one size and just folded down the extra in the back. If you do that, expect a huge fluffy butt. Newborn prefolds are cheap enough, can be used as doublers later, and have phenomenal resale value. I would say get 2 dozen of those.

Best bottoms will be one of the first OS diapers to fit, but probably still won't fit right away. Their snap in inserts are nice but obviously they don't contain newborn poo very well. I would say use prefolds with those covers until your baby stops pooping as often, and maybe by that point you could jump up to size large inserts if you wanted to save $$. (Lots of ppl use the size large inserts on the medium rise in BB).

24-36 changes are recommended for the newborn stage for every other day washing, and 6-8 covers. If you picked up 2 doz NB prefolds, I would say you can get by with what you have, but you my en up washing more frequently or filling in with disposables. Which would be fine if that's okay with you.

I would suggest adding some fleece liners (very easy to make) as many newborns are sensitive to wetness at first, and maybe a little sample size of cd safe diaper cream. That gets you off to a good start and you can buy more from there depending on what you like.

    nope!

1 - DD was in her newborn stash for about 3 months, my OS stuff didn't fit for the first 2 months - but she gained weight REALLY slowly at first

2 - others gave suggestions, but I would say 1-2 small wet bags for when you go out for just a couple hours (church, dinner, park, grocery store, whatever) - they're easier to throw in your diaper bag, but just hold about 2 (maybe 3) diapers.  I have 2 so I can do laundry every other day and never be without one.  Especially as LO gets older, you tend to go out more often.
