Elisabeth... Middle name suggestions?

If I have a girl, I'd like to name her after my grandmother. Her name was Lizzie, but everyone called her Beth. I've been going back and forth between Beth, Bethany, and Elisabeth. (I prefer the Elisabeth spelling, it seems less harsh without the z.)  Lately, I'm leaning towards Elisabeth more.

I'm not sure how my husband will like Elisabeth but we already decided if we have a boy, his dads name will be involved. He's always loved the name McKenzie for a girl. It's not my style, honestly. I'm not crazy about any "Mac" names.

Anyways, now I'm trying to think of a middle name. Our last name is one syllable and simple. So far I've got:

Elisabeth Taylor
Elisabeth Grace
Elisabeth Anne
Elisabeth Audrey
Elisabeth Kate

  • I agree- no Elisabeth Taylor. . . but I do like the rest.

I also like the Elisabeth spelling much better than with a Z.

  • Yeah-- maybe you are too young, but maybe google Elizabeth Taylor.  She was a cool lady, but not sure if you want that association following your child.

I have always loved Elisabeth Anne.  Classy and timeless.

  • My mom's name is Elizabeth Ann. She passed away so when I had my first daughter I named her Bethany Anastasia.

Elisabeth Anne has my vote, if you're set on Elisabeth. But I'm also a fan of Bethany.

  • Thanks ladies!

I did find out that my grandmothers middle name is Mae. I never knew that, (she had Alzheimer's and I never really got the chance to know her as I got older) and now I'm completely sold on Elisabeth Mae. I just hope that my husband will be as in love with it as I am!

  • I am sort of confused, sorry. Your grandmothers given name was Lizzie (like on her birth certificate) but people called her Beth? This seems really odd. Never heard that one. Both are nicknames for Elisabeth.

I really love the name Elisabeth. There are a million great nicknames and it will grow so well with your daughter.

Elisabeth Taylor -- please NO! Elisabeth Audrey makes me think of Elisabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. Another no. Grace just feels like filler to me. Elizabeth Anne sounds sweet, and I also like Elisabeth Catherine, but not just Kate. I would prefer Catherine Elisabeth though.

What about - Claire, Jane, June, or other less used middles.

  • Oi I love Elisabeth Mae. You mentioned that you didn't know her very well. If this is the case, would you like to have the middle name honor someone on your husband's side maybe? Or maybe you were very close and I am misunderstanding.

We were very close when I was younger. As I got into my teenage years she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She lived two hours away, so our time together was very limited. Once she got placed in a nursing home I no longer had the chance to go spend my summers with her. So I never got to ask her about her past and actually get to know more about her as a person rather than just my grandmother. Everyone on the other side of my family isn't too close, so she's always had a very special place in my heart.

I'm unsure of why she was called Beth when her name was Lizzie. That's a question I haven't ever really thought about asking. Also, my husbands grandmother is named Betty. So Elisabeth would honor both of our grandmothers.

  • I love the name Elisabeth. If I have a girl she will be Elizabeth. I don't think you can go wrong with a classic middle name either. My top pick is Elizabeth Claire but my fiance is not too keen on Claire. We've compromised (for now) with Elizabeth Rose. However, I'm sure that will change before April if we're even having a girl!
