  • If you can't control your kids or your temper around your kids in an OB office than you need to figure something else out. I understand if there are no other options but don't bring a whole party to the OBand then tell other women that they're bigger than you after they say they're due after you.

Can you guys where I am and what's happening?

  • Yeah so back to my e-cig situation.  I told my manager and he spoke with guys that are doing it.  They are still doing it because they are saying they are e-hookahs and not e-cig so there's no danger. They are claiming if I have a problem I need to move.  I am sooooo pissed.  Why should I have to move my desk when you are doing something that is so gross and frankly unprofessional! I called my OB and they really could give me any advice.  They said they are unsure of any dangers yet.  UGH this is so frustrating.

  • @jennwilhoite‌, I had a very annoying wait at my OB office yesterday. This kid kept hitting his Mom w/ a magazine and screaming. She just ignored him. Ugh, if I leave work early and am on time I get irritated enough sitting around in the waiting room 20 minutes past my appointment start time. The last thing I need is a screaming kid to pile on to my aggravation!

There is no difference between an e-hookah pen and an e-cig, except for the supposed lack of nicotine. So in this your coworkers are wrong and stupid.  And just like a coworker who has issues with personal hygiene, if they are stinking you out (regardless of any potential dangers) they should be talked to.

Now depending on the state you live in, there may already be laws regarding vaping indoors (yes what they are doing is vaping no matter what type of device they think they have). It's normally been being bundled under the existing anti-smoking laws in terms of smoking indoors. Depending on the state you live in they may currently be breaking a law.  And even if there isn't a law, your boss has every right to tell them to do it on their break not at their desk.

You can tell your boss that if there are any dangers regarding second hand vapor, it has nothing to do with the nicotine content of the e-cig or e-hookah, it more than likely will have to do with the flavoring or other possible contaminants that may be in their poor quality prefilled chinese devices (they are chinese devices because no "e-hookah" devices are produced in the US.)

You're comfort is more important than them sucking on flavor sticks. Since they are not using them for nicotine replacement (which is the main reason most e-cig users are using e-cigs) then they have no addictive need to use an e-hookah pen at work. They are not doing it to get their nicotine fix, they are just doing it because they are being dicks.

If you boss isn't the end point in your work place(meaning you can go over their head to someone higher) I would do that. If you have an HR department, or a higher boss take it up with them, because your boss isn't going to do anything about it. They have no rights to vape e-hookahs in the work place. If they are doing something that is annoying and offensive to other workers, namely you, then they should be held accountable for their behavior and required to stop.

This might be an UO. I'm annoyed with ice bucket challege for ALS. Don't get me wrong, it's great that it's raising awareness and money for this terrible disease but I feel like celebrities are doing it to gain air time. Especially the women and men that are just trying to show off their bodies. With all their money, they could have been donating all along and not just jumping on the bandwagon to get their name in the news.

Totally disagree. As someone who has ALS run in my family and has watched family members suffer from this disease, I hope this stays popular as long as possible. I truly think it's one of the worst (if not THE worst) things someone could suffer from and any and all awareness and fundraising is welcome. It's fantastic people are paying attention, even if everyone's motives aren't 100% pure.
I think the outcome is awesome! I have also seen family members suffer from this. But I was strictly commenting on how the celebrities are annoying me. They should have been already donating their funds for great causes. It's sad that it took this. That's what I was getting at.

I hate baby bedding that is only sold in huge 9 piece sets for so much $$$. I found the perfect bedding, but I have to buy the matching curtains, the decorative pillow, the quilt, all of it. I just want the sheets, the changing pad, the dust ruffle, and the bumper. I totally understand why they do it and it just makes me mad!

ETA- I realize that this is probably not an UO, but it seemed like the best place to rant.

around Wisconsin a few months ago (like april and may) there was a cold water challenge for a little girl with cancer. People jumped in a cold body of water after being nominatedor donate money to cancer research. I think its great idea to spread the word and awareness as long as people know thats why they are doing it. After awhile, people just thought it was a crazy challenge and had no idea what it was for! As long as people keep spreading the word about ALS, im totally fine with it! Even like you said, no matter what their motives are.

I really can't figure out why its ok with anyone to smoke a hookah (e or otherwise) at the office. That is the most unprofessional thing I've ever heard. Maybe I'm just behind the times, but I thought that was something you brought out at parties or once you got home. It never occurred to me that it would be more ok because it was a hookah at work.

  • I don't believe in changing tables (unless you just need an extra piece of furniture for more storage). Throw down a clean blanket somewhere soft or use a changing pad (if you must). Why do I need an extra piece of furniture that exists solely to change diapers on? Am I going to go running to it every time baby needs a change?

I love my changing table but it is also a dresser. I hate having to bend down on the ground to change my DD. It's just awkward for me.

The concept confuses me too - they are all about health, fitness, "eating clean", but they have $5K of fake body front and center.  WUT?

This!! The one I have on my registry is a dresser, with a detachable box looking thing for you to insert a changing pad. I love it.

I will make it a rule that baby must be changed on the changing table for at least the first year. That way I can feel the top part got a fair share of use. lol

  • Fundraiser's perspective: The challenge has increased donations from nearly $2M to nearly $16M for the same time period last year. With more than 300K new donors, if the ALS Association's stewardship practices are any good, they'll retain some big donors for future gifts that'll fund more breakthroughs. My org would not sneeze at that, AWish celebrity videos and slacktivists aside. We'd take it in a heartbeat to support our cause.

We also just put our changing pad on the dresser. It was very convenient. Why spend money on a changing table when you can just put the changing pad on the dresser or change the baby's diaper on the floor.

To play devils advocate: yesterday I read an interesting article that argues the ALS challenge has a negative impact on charities in general. "Slacktivists" aren't likely to donate to any other cause for quite a while if they participate in such a public event (ie: I did a good deed and everyone knows about it! I can get away with donating to NOTHING for years and not feel bad!). I think the concept of the ALS challenge is brilliant, but it does suck for other charities that may see a drop in their own fundraising. On the other side of things, I think it just sets the fundraising bar a little higher: instead of bitching about the spotlight being on a different charity, fundraisers need to focus on creating something innovative for the cause that's important to you.
That's true of any event that gets major attention. Sandy hits? Upswing in donations for the Red Cross from donors small and large (but ONLY to Sandy ... no one wants to give unrestricted funds, so it's not like the whole org benefits). While Sandy relief efforts are ongoing, other charities are taking a hit. Once recovery kicks in, Red Cross sees their overall donations drop. Charity is a seesaw unless you're a donor committed to the mission.

Fundraising creativity is huge, though, you're right. Part of my job is to generate ideas. We're small and local; we're not going to get the kind of attention an ALS bucket challenge would. But we can try to mobilize the city to support us through innovative and creative campaigns.

Also it should be severely curtailed in business communications--there is a lady at my work who sends e-mails that will say something like "How do you get this screen to work???? I don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!" I wish I was exaggerating, but I'm not.
The president of my company sends out emails like that. To people outside of our office. Mostly with ....................... not so much the ?????? and !!!!!!!!!!! but I've seen those too. Bugs the crap out of me.

I have never, ever used a changing table.

For the first 6mo or so, I put a waterproof pad down in the crib, and baby is changed in there.  The remainder of the time, I just change them on the floor.

There are SO many useless things you "must have" as a parent, and I've found that you can live without about 95% of them.

  • I agree mostly on the changing table thing. During the day I'm sure I will be downstairs a lot with the baby and I'm not running upstairs to the nursery every time I need to change the baby. We do plan to get a dresser with a top for changing. Honestly if it's 3am and I haven't slept in a week and I get down on the floor to change a diaper I may never get back up.
  • Do people think you go upstairs to the changing table even if you're hanging out downstairs?

Team pad on dresser here.  My parts were so torn up after having DD, I couldn't have bent down to the floor if I wanted to.  I use it every morning and night with DD and she will be two next month...put her up there, change diaper, grab clothes out of the drawer...awesome.

The "Dr. couldn't find HB" thread annoys me.  Well, not the OP, but the responses to it.

I can't believe so many people are up in arms that the dr didn't immediately call for an ultrasound, when it's COMPLETELY NORMAL (yes, caps are required here) to not be able to find a heartbeat at 13 weeks.

Heavens to Murgatroid, people.  Calm your everloving tits.  If I stressed that much over something so minor I'd be dead from ulcers of a heart attack by now.  With my first kid, they didn't even TRY to find the heartbeat with the doppler until 15 weeks, and have a policy not to.  I am definitely not crying malpractice on my doctor.

But jeez, you're going to give pregnant people a bad name if you call up demanding to be seen immediately, and if they don't, that you switch practices.  For a completely normal duty of care.

(Of course, high-risk pregnancies are excluded from this rant)

My eyes are rolling so hard they're almost out of my head.  The potato is feeling snarky today.
I don't necessarily disagree with you here--I definitely think there is a problem using a Doppler that early. I guess my issue is that they DID, and now they have a nervous mama on their hands, and as a service provider shouldn't they be more willing to help allay her fears? But you're right, a Doppler is pretty hit and miss at this point.
I think the Dr should have prefaced it with "we may not find anything at this point because it's still early"... but it sounds like the Dr was not worried, and said they'd try again next time.  I would take that as a "baby was in a bad position or I just couldn't find it" and wouldn't go running away looking for an U/S.

I'm super laid back about this stuff, though, and I just don't understand people who get worked up over minor crap like this.  I mean, I have moments of anxiety for sure, but I've got that logical part of my brain that regulates the need to freak the heck out over every minor detail.

I do agree when that its scary when the dr cant find the heartbeat and i also had this happen during my 2nd pregnancy. Sometimes baby just tucks itself somewhere hard to find when its still early. The place i went during pregnancy 2 didnt have u/s equipment. They just scheduled my an appointment with a NP for 2 weeks later. Its not uncommon and nothing to cause anyone to mutter the phrase malpractice.

I just don't think that if you're on a first pregnancy, where the doctor has no reason to believe that there is a problem, that you should borrow more trouble by getting so worked up about something like this.

I guess I just have trust enough that my OB would let me know if there was need for concern.... Wondering too, why she left the office without asking more questions. The Dr was right there. Ask him/her if you are stressing or wondering about something. My god, don't drive home, get on the computer, ask us and then stress the hell out when people tell you that it is not normal. The Dr is really the one to ask.

On a side note, the amount of people stressing over stupid shit is crazy. It is going to be a LONG 9 months.

    That is my unpopular opinion

Dang. So is my post one that makes you upset? I do my doctoring at a hospital so they have all the bells and whistles. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.
It's one thing to have that as your treatment - you've got all the bells and whistles, but not everyone does.  It doesn't mean that you're getting negligent treatment.

I'm upset at the general level of up-in-armedness of the entire post.  The doctor did nothing wrong.  This is not grounds for switching practices.

  • They could have asked her to come back at 15 weeks, not a full month later.

After going through shit for previous miscarriages, I look back and think that I should have pressed for an u/s instead of going through mental hell... even for the first occurrence, before I had a history of m/c.  I would have paid for a piece of mind.  Did someone really cry malpractice?
They didn't say malpractice in so many words, but they were strongly insisting that her doctor was wrong, that she should have been seen right away, and if they couldn't do that, she should find another doctor who would.  Insinuating that maybe her doctor was doing something wrong (which I don't think he was).

I can understand being concerned about not hearing the HB at a doctors appt especially if this is your first pregnancy and you dont know that its normal. So if you expect it, and the doctor has this "oh well, next time" approach... you maybe caught a little off guard. She might have tried to let it go, but it was still bothering her... so she reached out to others for their opinions. I dont think she is out of line or wrong for doing what she did.

I DO however agree with you, in that it may have been a bit panicky of the board to have gone all CODE 10 in responses they gave.

I personally would have freaked out if my doctor couldnt find the HB, but then I wouldve went home and looked for it myself. It all depends on how long the doc searches, and where they search. If it wasnt for the fact that I usually know where the baby is prior to my appointments, during the searching period when the doctor isnt getting a read I would probably be a nervous wreck too.
