I think the ALS challenge is stupid. Just donate and STFU.
Agreed. And, isn't the ice water the choice you make to opt out of donating? Everything in my newsfeed says "do the ice water challenge OR donate $100 within 24 hrs"
@kari5186 You're supposed to do one or the other but it seems like a lot of people (at least on my fb) want to be AWs and do both.
I think the point of the ALS videos is it's supposed to AW, to get more people to notice and donate. Donations are up for them 6000% and people don't just randomly donate these days, you need a gimmick or something viral. Many people are just doing a water dump video and wanting to show off an awesome body, and whatever to that, but if one person out of 10 donated too or instead it's a win for the campaign. I've mentioned before that DH is friends with Pete Frates, the kid who started it, and he is a remarkable kid so obviously when I see someone doing it it doesn't bother me at all. My sister did something cute though when DH challenged her. She got an ice bucket, opened a bottle of champagne and then opened her laptop and donated online. She called it the "bubbly bucket challenge." We knew she would give money so that's why we picked her, but making the video helped get other people on board.
I knew nothing about ALS before the ice bucket challenge, so I have to agree with @calikat80.
We already touched on my UO yesterday, but I despise the Duggar family. I don't like how they are popularizing their extremist patriarchal fundamental bullsh*t. Yeah, they seem like a nice enough family, but everything they stand for is rooted in a dangerous mindset and it terrifies me.
My UO is inspired by the spam thread. I don't let my kids watch any of the shows on Sprout thanks to Nina and star. The way she worded something one time ages ago rubbed me the wrong way.
I'm all for the ALS ice bucket challenge. My husband dumped water on his head and donated as well. We've known a few people who have died from ALS, including a 35 year old friend of ours. ALS is a terrible, terrible disease and I'm all about bringing awareness to it.
I guess my UO is most people (not everyone) saying the challenge wastes water are getting the big side eye from me. Clean water is another cause dear to my heart and all of the sudden we have a bunch if critical environmentalists, driving SUVs, buying bottled water and using paper plates for every meal. That's fine and all but let's not get all high and mighty about one bucket of water if you haven't said a peep about the environment before this.
ETA I know there are legit environmentalists annoyed by this challenge and this isn't why I am directing my side eye at!
Exactly @Bleachy14 ! There hasn't been one piece of paper distributed or any merchandise manufactured, no overhead for the organization, etc. Just say you aren't doing it, don't try and justify not doing it because of a cause you know nothing about. (Or better yet make some lifestyle changes if this spurred you into water awareness, which I'm doubting is the case!)
On the subject of brochures being bad for the environment I'll leave you this (courtesy of my co-workers e-mail signature).
It's OK to print. Paper is a biodegradable, renewable, and sustainable product made from
trees. Growing and harvesting trees provides jobs for millions of people here in
Canada and throughout North America. Working forests are good for the
environment and provide clean air, clean water and wildlife habitat. Please
remember to recycle.
@GraceInCA DH and I actually fear he rise of buying bottled water will contribute to a growing socioeconomic divide in America and if the pressure is off the government to provide clean drinking water in our country it will marginalized low income communities even more. Put that in your liberal conspiracy theory pipe and smoke it!
While in many religions it is bad for both men and women, the onus is put on women to enforce it and female "purity" is far more emphasized than male purity. Even in Catholicism (raised catholic) although it is definitely not a gender specific rule, I got more of an earful about it at my all girls catholic school than my male friends at the all boy schools. I think it is even more lopsided for the fundies and other Christian religions- I mean those purity balls where the dad gives the tween girl a ring and pledges to stay a virgin? Weird. And if it were equal we'd be hearing about (equally weird) mother son dances.
@wren1212 my parents were really progressive Catholics and I was raised in the religion with much more tolerant views about sexuality and politics in the church, so it's possible! The Jesuits usually hit the right notes for me. When in doubt consult a Jesuit
I was not raised Catholic, nor "fundie" Christian, but definitely conservative Christian. Purity was encouraged equally for girls and guys -- it was equally our jobs in a relationship or on a date. It was definitely taught as something that can and should be enjoyed in a marriage. I felt like I got a very healthy view of everything, and I hope to raise N the same way. I will encourage her to save sex for marriage, but she will make her own choices, and she will know I love her no matter what.
Ok here's my real UO: I'm going to teach my boys to try and hook up with as many girls as possible as young as they want to start experimenting. Sow those wild oats! Just kidding, I never want to talk with them about sex, ever. I can honestly barely handle the random baby boners.
@Bleachy14 DH gets so defensive too! He's like, "he can't help it! It's not sexual!" Well duh, I know, but this weird little erect penis is making it hard for me to get a diaper on. You'd think by my second boy I'd be more comfortable with them but nope, still a little weird to see a baby boner. It never happened babysitting so I never knew!
@NaChelleBeck it was back about 5 years ago so not sure if they still play the episode. But it was on the one where the word of the day was Spanish. She taught it and then afterwards said that everyone should learn Spanish that way we can talk to our neighbors. I'm all for learning a second language and what, but the way she said it/worded it made me stabby.
@sympkin Where I work there are no toner cartridges (OK, in the office there are). Just huge vats of vegetable based inks. I agree that paper is freaking heavy and the shipping costs are crazy. Does that fact that most of it ships by rail make it any better?
Jumping on the premarital sex thing: I think I might have already said this in UO a few months back, but I feel like choices about sex and virginity are very personal, and people shouldn't shame either way. Yes, some religions shame people into not having sex before marriage, but I have also seen the shaming going the other way: people telling others that it's ridiculous if they want to wait, that they will probably have a horrible married sex life if they wait, etc. I'm team do-what-you-want; it's no one else's business. I didn't wait, but I say more power to you if you wanted to and stuck to it.
maybe this should be saved for tomorrow, but I think part of the whole no sex before marriage in the sense that sex is bad and scary is a tool to repress women's sexuality. Those of you who got a sexual education while abstaining until marriage are obviously not in that group.
Was, you wrote this yesterday in spam and i want to know more. How does it repress only women's sexuality and not men's as well?
Not saying there are not millions of factors that repress women's sexuality but I want to know more about this one.
I wondered this too. I was raised Catholic and sex was wrong for EVERYONE. Males and females alike. Sexual repression all the way across the board.
We know for a fact that the world over that women are sexually repressed through religion, but taking that out of the conversation for a second: the idea of a virginal bride is something that is revered and respected in our culture while a virginal 30-something man is seen as faarrrr outside the norm.
Baby boners happen to only the most virile of the babies boys. Lock up your daughters ladies, the calikat boys will be on the prowl soon! But yes they are real, and weird.
For me encountering them? Probably not. I'm averaging at least one boner sighting, albeit in different context sometimes, a day over here. So. Many. Boners.
Ds1 announced to all of the teachers in prek that daddy penis was "soooo big! His penis is huge!" I told them it was all about perspective and not get too excited. He also says "pee nas" and makes it a way longer word than it should be.
Ds1 has always had frequent boners. I noticed that ds2 doesn't have the much. Ds1 always points it out to me when he has one- like if he's using the bathroom or I'm bathing him. Boys are gross.

This is great. We have a Pur filter in our fridge, and have immediate access to good water on tap.

But yes they are real, and weird.
Yes, they eventually go away. And then they come back with a vengeance, but that that point luckily it's behind closed doors.
