Sleep help needed

Lo goes down with our help but we are ok with that because I can get her to sleep in 5-10 minutes. The problems are her MOTN wake ups. We have tried all the methods here and most recently extinction crying after first checking her to make sure nothing was wrong. Last night was #4 and she cried for 2hrs. Is she just not sleep trainable?

Re: Sleep help needed

  • I think you need to train her to go to sleep on her own at bedtime and the MOTN wakings will work themselves out.

  • When she wakes in the MOTN what does she need? Cuddles? Is she she hungry?
  • No advice just commiserating. DD goes down on her own without a peep (most nights) but is up 4-5 times every night. We're looking into other issues (she has severe acid reflux) but we aren't sure if there's a medical problem or she is just really fricken stubborn.

Has she always been a poor sleeper or has it developed recently?
  • We were told recently that our DS has restless leg syndrome. Honestly,  I never thought that was a real thing or even considered it but we have had sleep issues for a long time. We tried every type of sleeping training and nothing helped. He got ear tubes put in but it didn't make a huge difference. He had a sleep study done recently and it turns out he has RLS. Not saying that's the problem but ask your doctor about it.
  • J dropped his MOTN wake ups q hen we went to one nap a day
  • I know every baby is different, but I can only tell you what worked for us. We followed the sleep lady technique and used the book (goodnight, sleep tight). We followed the advice almost exactly. My husband responded to all night waking a during sleep training. I was still nursing at the time so I = milk. Anyway, we found the tips in the book to be so helpful and not vague. Other sleep books I had read were not very clear to me, but this book says if this happens, do this, etc.

  • No advice, just wanted to say you are not alone. My guy is an awful sleeper. He cries going to bed and still wakes 1 or two times and he's up at 5. We just stopped nursing and I know part of it is this. He was addicted to my boob but I just couldn't do it anymore, especially after miscarriage. I feel guilty but I'm hoping it's a short phase
  • Commiseration here, too.  Still dealing with 2-5 wake ups per night.
  • Owen likes to keep us guessing. STTN a few in a row then up 4 times per night for a few days. I feel your pain, and you're not alone. Sometimes he just needs cuddles, sometimes a bottle, sometimes just to play.

  • Sorry to post and run this morning. Work is crazy and the 1 thing I miss about pumping was that I could bump during the day.

@Boo0512‌ - She really has been a poor naper and sleeper for a long time.

We were just recently at the dr to have her ears checked since she has had ear infections before and her pedi said the wake us were behavioral. She just wants to be held and sometimes some water.

Feels better that I am not alone. A few co workers have those amazing babies that sleep 6-6 no issues. So I feel like I doing something wrong since lo doesn't and she is older.

  • I'm sorry. I hope you can get some sleep soon. Every day I think to myself, I can't do this another day, but somehow all of us are. I just keep telling myself that SOMEDAY she'll STTN. Someday.....

I'm assuming you've tried a million things but have you left a sippy cup with water in her crib? Favorite blankets and/or stuffed animals to cuddle? Pillows? Pacifiers?

Just trying to think of anything that might help. None of it has worked for us.
  • She has a lovey and blanket in the crib. I can't leave a sippy of water since she likes one that isn't leak proof. (Thanks daycare for not using the straw cup I bought for her). Because of her tongue and lip tie she never could take a paci so still doesn't now.

  • I'm also in the poor sleeper boat.  I had it so easy initially....she'd sleep a good 4 hour stretch each night from birth, and was STTN at about 4 months.  She started getting ear infections and teething around 10 months, and the sh*t hit the fan.  She ended up getting ear tubes last month, and I thought it would help....but no!  Last night, she only got up once.  The night before it was 3 times.  I know it's a phase, so I get up with her and *gasp* nurse her back to sleep.  I know she won't do it forever, so it doesn't bother me.

  • Oh yeah! I remembered something our pedi said! She said if J's sleep didn't get better that I could try a multi-vitamin with iron in it. She said she didn't want to test him because I had seen improvement but if I saw a decline again to try it! Maybe ask your pedi about it?
  • @huzzahuzza‌ - what was the reason for the vitamins helping to sleep?
    IAmPregnant Ticker
  • It was the iron.  She didn't really explain it very well but said that sometimes she tells parents to give their kids an iron supplement and their kids start sleeping through the night.  It made sense to me because J doesn't eat a whole lot of iron rich foods.
When I was researching restless leg syndrome when I was pg, they mentioned low iron could be a culprit of RLS. So maybe @littledaisies has something on my pedi!?!?
