Breastfeeding

Pumping Question

One breast doesn't respond as well to the pump. If I keep pumping that side, will that breast eventually start letting down more? Up until now, I have just avoided pumping on that side but I'm worried about when I go back to work & will need to pump on both sides. Any advice?

Re: Pumping Question

  • I always just pump both sides, even if LO has just nursed on one.  If you avoid pumping on the side with lower output, that breast won't get the signal that it needs to make more milk.

  • I have one side that won't output very much unless I do breast compressions. The other one is just fine. It's normal for output to be different between sides too though.

  • Thank you. Just to clarify, the milk is there but doesn't want to come out for the pump. The milk will come out for baby though.
  • You should pump both. At the very least it will continue to stimulate the other one so it can get used to the pump and should start responding better.

  • I've had this problem and the solution to mine was needing two different flange sizes. Just a thought.
