Cloth Diapering

Ordering my stash Friday --did I pick well?

Okay. I have--

2 dozen green mountain small prefold diapers
2 dozen GM medium prefold diapers
6 snappi fasteners (is this too many?)
6 Thristies Duo Wrap covers in the size 1
2 pail liners
2 wet bags

Is this a good start?

Re: Ordering my stash Friday --did I pick well?

  • You probably only need 3 snappis.

And you'll probably need some newborn size prefolds. If gmd's prefold sizing is the same as their workhorse sizing, the small is probably going to be too big at first.

Definitely a good start.  I would hold off on the medium prefolds until you're sure you love prefolds.  I loved prefolds in the beginning, but then fell in love with velcro pockets after my DS started showing a sensitivity to wetness and turned into a squirmy monkey on the changing table.

ETA: Also, I agree about the snappis.  I only really used one of my three.
  • I'm new at this and I just ordered my stash this morning. I've read that getting a diverse collection of covers may be best because you don't know how each brand will fit your baby. So you might want to mix it up a bit with the covers until you know what works.
  • I agree about holding off on the medium size. My DD is 10 weeks/12lbs and still fits size small. I never used newborn though so I cannot give you a size comparison.

But newborns are little bean poles so it might be good to get some NB sized prefolds.

  • Agree with all the prefold suggestions above - my DD was born at 7lbs 14oz and she fit into newborn prefolds for 2 months.  She's always been long/lean... would've looked ridiculous in small prefolds at the beginning.

My thirsties duo size 1 didn't fit for the first few weeks.  For us, Bummis super brite xs and Rumparooz lil joey covers worked best right from the beginning.  Just something to consider!
  • If you want to do cloth full time on a newborn, you will need 36 changes if you want to wash EOD.

Small prefolds are doable on a nb, but will be very bulky. It is worth investing in nb size.

I also agree with PPs about getting various brands of covers, but I would also suggest getting a couple more. There isn't a reason to get medium size prefolds now, so I would wait until you need them and see if you want to stick with all prefolds.

Have you considered getting a few of another type of diaper, just to try? I am a prefold lover, especially for tiny ones, but even I like to have a few other options for various reasons. Also, some people just end up not liking what they have, so an entire stash of one type is a little risky. If you do want to try something else, I suggest looking at the redesigned Kawaii Pure&Natural pockets. https://www.superstash.net/kawaii-redesigned-pure-natural/

  • I am getting a set of 6 Charley Banana pocket diapers as well. So don't get any mediums, get some new born and a different kind of cover?

Yeah, but as long as you are aware that the CB pockets will not fit right away, probably for 6-8weeks at a minimum.

  • I'm assuming you are getting the one-size CBs. I don't know how soon their sized will fit.

  • Well, we were given a bunch of newborn disposables as gifts and I was going to use those first and then switch to cloth when they are used up. I don't know how long they will last, of course, but they will give me a little time to see what sizes my LO fits in with the cloth.
  • I know everyone goes for Thirsties size one or size two for covers, but they also have a separate line that's xs sm med etc. YOu might try some of their smallest ones for a newborn cover.

If you have a lot, I would just start with the smalls, and then decide if you need/want nb before your sposies run out. Although if you are planning on more babies I would go ahead with nb.

  • Wow, you guys have been great with all the info! I will make a few adjustments and we should be ready for LO when he arrives in a few weeks.
  • Just in case you want to add to the stash andbecause someoesaid "if GMC workhorse sizing is same as prefolds" or close to that - I'm finding the newborn workhorses to last/fit a lot longer. My small/skinny 15 week old was too big for the NB prefolds to work well a couple weeks ago but the workhorses still are on almost tightest snaps. Though are darting to seem a not too short in the rise but probably OK a couple more weeks at least.

Also agree more covers and try a couple other types just in case. And agree fewer snappis.

  • What is a workhorse?
  • You'll probably go through 12-18 diapers/day during NB phase. That's how you can estimate how long your stash of NB disposables will last. You can always cut yourself off at any time and trade in unopened packages, I believe there are a few places that will give you store credit for unopened diapers.

I think you've gotten a lot of good advice so far. Maybe add 6-12 NB workhorses, or even half a dozen flats for a trimmer option. Someone mentioned in another thread that GMD is now offering a half-size flat that would be great for NBs, or might work well as a NB doubler. So a few of those might be nice to have as well.
  • We're not doing cloth wipes (yet) Hubby put his foot down on no cloth wipes because cloth diapering is already a stretch for him. I have no doubt when he sees how much $$$ that is down the drain he'll change his mind.
  • Meh.  Even if you do cloth diapers and disposable wipes (we do) it's no big deal.  A lot of people do find cloth wipes actually easier if you're doing cloth diapers already.  With disposable wipes you have to throw the diaper in one place (wetbag) and the wipe in another (trash can.)  But if they are both cloth, you throw the wipe in the diaper and throw it all in the wetbag.
That being said, MH very frequently throws the disposable wipe in the wetbag with the diaper and it goes through the laundry and we haven't had any issues with that.

  • my Thirsties Size 1 covers didn't fit DD until she was about 2 months old.  I ditto the newborn covers too (my rumparooz were my favorite - bummis and blueberry size 1 were also good).

People say to have a variety, but I built my stash of mostly prefolds, and am very happy with our decision.  I do have a variety of covers, and some definitely fit better than others.  I have some AIOs (which didn't fit for about 3 months), which we use when we're out, but they don't get much use at home.  And we've never tried pockets.
