2nd Trimester

Sore gums/jaw

I am 15+3 and have had terrible bleeding gums and sore teeth for the past couple of weeks, I have never had problems/cavities or sensitivity and I have always had regular cleanings/check ups so this is really out of the ordinary for me.

I made an appointment with a Dentist and saw her today, she told me it was a combination of the Diclectin and pregnancy hormones causing my gums to swell and hurt and to just keep brushing and flossing even if it hurts and bleeds. She also told me that my teeth sensitivity is pregnancy related. They booked me in for a cleaning in a few days (which I am terrified that it is going to hurt) and they said that it might help a little bit but basically until baby is born I will probably have to deal with the pain.

Anyone else going through this and did you find anything that helps?

I stopped wearing my night guard because I think its causing more irritation right now and now I am getting head aches from clenching my jaw :( I use Gum defense tooth paste twice a day, and I brush my teeth after lunch with an all natural tooth paste from the health food store. I also floss daily and use mouth wash so not sure what else I can do so any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Nothing else you really can do unless you want to try oil pulling (google it)

I have had a tooth crack and break with every pregnancy. (Except this one) my dentist told me dental problems are common in pregnant women.

  • I totally forgot about oil pulling I used to do it, maybe I will look into it again, I just wish I could eat without being in pain because of my teeth and gums!.  Ouch, that sucks!
  • I use coconut oil. It has helped with my bleeding gums so far this pregnancy.

  • Yeah i've heard of pregancy gingivitis. Last time my dentist said 'they used to say have a baby lose a tooth' but we won't let that happen. I had some gum bleeding last time, not so much this time. I've been using an electric toothbrush for months leading up to getting pregnant - not on purpose, just happened to make the switch - and I found that really frequent flossing, brushing and mouthwash really can make a difference.
  • Thanks ladies, I went to the dentist and after two hours of brutal cleaning (and I have to go back for another hour where they freeze my mouth) I feel a lot better. I started oil pulling in the morning and flossing both morning and night. I have never had such bad plaque but I am wondering if it is because the thought of tooth paste made me puke until 13 weeks so I didn't brush as long or thoroughly as I usually do.
