October 2014 Moms

What would you do?

I ordered a Tommie tippee diaper pail from babies r us and today when I received my order instead of it being the diaper pail it was a convertible car seat. It is a nice car seat so I am thinking about keeping it and just going and buying the diaper pail. Is that bad? I just wanted to see what other moms would do. I know that I should return it but I feel like they screwed up and I win for a change. Am I a terrible person?

  • Crate & Barrel once sent me an extra set of napkins and I returned those; so, yes, I would return a car seat.

    Ultimately it's your call.

  • I say it is their fault and think bad of me if you want but I would keep it.
  • I'd keep it if I needed it, but I'd always be wondering when they'll catch their mistake and charge me the remainder of the price.

Well, may not rack up any karma points, but I don't give a shit and I would keep it if I needed it. Amazon messed up 2 Christmases ago and sent me my order 2x but only charged me once. It was a nice toddler sized chair ($80), so I gave one to DD and the other one to her cousin who is 5 months older.
Oooh, let's all confess. Amazon once sent me two iPod Nanos. Kept 'em.
Ooh, shit yeah. I'd be stoked. I'd probably sell the extra on craigslist too!

That barista was an asshole! I would have definetly said something. But I wouldn't say you are an idiot, more like kind and understanding. NOT bad traits to have, especially as a mother
    ;)

This.  I would hate to get an "unexpected" charge once they found their error.

  • I once received an extra $300 knife set from Williams and Sonoma. My mother wanted to keep the second set. I ended up calling them to let them know they'd sent two. They have me a huge discount (like 80%) and thanked me profusely for letting them know. So I felt I did the right thing and got a beautiful set of knives on the cheap. Calling may be worth it.
  • I did not sign for it. It was left at the door.
  • I would keep it in the box for a while. If they don't ask for it back then open it.

  • Gateway sent me two of the same laptops when I was in college.  I called to return one, and the guy wanted me to UPS it back to them.  I said I wanted a shipping voucher because I didn't want to pay it out of pocket and wait for Gateway to send me a refund check.  He took down my email and contact information to send the voucher.  It never came, I called back another time, and they had no record of my first conversation, so I gave them the information again, and again I never received the voucher.  In both conversations they showed now record of sending two computers, so I chalked it up to trying my hardest and moved on.

My mom got a new computer!

I was talking to a friend who worked in customer service for a music supply company and she said it was probably more of a hassle to figure out how they sent two without record, and then re-inventory a non-existent computer according to them.

If I were you, I'd probably try to return it, but I wouldn't go out of my way.  If I was put on hold or transferred from person to person, then forget it.
Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! June 22, 2012 - heard the heartbeat 9w1d 181 BPM!! 24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • Nope I'd keep.... I'm not a good person.
  • Call them. Let them know their mistake. And keep it. They can't charge you for something that you didn't buy and that they shipped to you in error.

All of this "send it back" stuff... tuh. There's no reason to feel guilty or feel like a thief. You didn't do anything wrong. You'll just have to pay for your pail a second time when you re-order or go to the store to get it. Chalk it up to a gift for the inconvenience.

And feel bad for whoever got the pail instead of their car seat. lol

Huh? What happened with a barista?
    @nicb13

"I almost started my day by telling off the guy in Starbucks who saw me walk in and automatically said, "decaf?", and when I said "No, 1/2 caff.", proceeded to tell me that he will be putting in more decaf than caf. I lectured him on the data regarding caffeine consumption in 3rd trimester, along with the permitted amounts and the amount I would actually be consuming.

He told me I was still getting more decaf."

I forgot to add that he also gave me a grande when I ordered a venti.  I was giving him the benefit of the doubt that part wasn't intentional.

  • I am a huge believer in Karma. I would call and let them know what happenned. If they tell you to keep it then karma is on your side.
Me: 33 - PCOS & Hypothyroidism DH: 35 - SA is good Married since 2010 (together since 2006) TTC since June 2009 (we knew we would have issues and wanted family right away after we got married). No pregnancies yet. May 2013 - started first round of Chlomid & ovidrel cycle.
  • Amazon sent me a case of six postpartum bath herbs, rather than the one box I ordered. I kept it. I'm also a huge believer in karma, and I think this is good karma coming back to you.
I'd wait and see if amazon contacts you. If not, keep it!

  • Nope..call and tell them about the mistake. Even though you didn't do anything wrong to end up with it, keeping it is wrong. I don't care if you signed or not...justifying it like that is really crappy. Just call and see what they say.

  • I would return it, but I'm a goody goody. I accidentally (I thought they were free) stole auto traders when I was 16 and still feel guilty. That was 16 years ago so I should probably get over it. Lol
  • I hate to tempt fate when I'm pregnant and have so much to lose....but...

...baby's cost a ton of money. Keep the seat.

  • That's tough! I would probably return it, but I'm also picky about my possessions... If I didn't pick it out, I probably wouldn't want it anyway, so wouldn't be too tempted.

Just last week, though, we got halfway home from Ikea before realizing that the cashier didn't ring up the most expensive item in our cart, a forty-dollar shelf. We talked about it and decided not to go back to pay.

I can tolerate perpetrating a little dishonesty against a huge company. Corporations aren't people. I once busted my butt tracking down a stranger on the internet to return a found wallet, because that actually mattered to someone.

But you know what, I bet my parents would scold me for the Ikea thing, if I told them about it...

  • Still think it is essentially stealing and losses for a company mean higher prices for everyone. But whatever...If you feel good about it I guess it is ok? (I would put in an eye roll smiley but I'm on mobile)

  • I work in corporate retail and I would keep the car seat. I wouldn't even feel bad about it. I believe it's good karma that you were sent a very nice car seat, and I also believe not feeling bad about it has its fair chance of bringing on some karma that's not so lucky haha.

I hate these karma arguments.  When some real serious shit happens in your life the last thing you want to think is it's karma coming back and biting you in the ass because you deserve it (and the last think anyone would want someone else to say about them is, "she had it coming, all that bad karma.", but when something like this happens, "yay, good karma!".  I don't get it.

^This. Also, the idea that getting free stuff is somehow a good karma payback is making me laugh. The universe is not thanking you by purposely messing up processing data.

I'm in the camp that keeping things that you didn't pay for and hoping the company doesn't notice is shitty. Of course the one iPad isn't going to sink Apple, but there are real life humans with real life jobs working at and relying on that company.
