Cloth Diapering

Diaper Sprayer

Necessary?  Not?  We're still about two months out from starting solids, but I want to be ready.  I read that some people just use like, a plastic spatula and flip it in, but how does that work with runny messes?

Do I have to spray my cloth wipes too?  School me!

Re: Diaper Sprayer

  • I honestly probably wouldn't CD without my sprayer.  LO's poops are ploppable most of the time now, but she has had many long phases of pb poo which is hopeless without a sprayer (IMHO.)  I have the BG one.  And yes, you'll need to spray your wipes too if they have poo on them.  Like, streaks are probably fine, but chunks, spray.

  • I agree with TJ. MH and I have talked several times about how the sprayer is must-have. So worth the money. We were at my parents' house over the weekend and had to do the dunk n' swish. It sucked, took longer, and wasn't as effective at removing all the solids.

  • I'm still trying to convince hubby that we'll need a sprayer eventually. He's a plumber and is offended by the thought of adding some attachment to the toilet. :P

We still have a long while before it'll be needed though as LO is only 2 months and I haven't bit the bullet in CDing DS too.

  • Yep, didn't even consider doing it without one. Spray pal, too.

I just got my sprayer last week, now I'm not sure what I did with out it. Dunking and swishing was gross! I always felt like I was playing in pooppy water, now I don't mind touching the diaper and ringing it out. It's more clean?!? Edited auto correct

  • I wish my plumbing wasn't dumb. I would love a sprayer. Dunking sucks.

  • I love my sprayer (we got the BG sprayer).  I'd have a harder time CDing if I had to dunk & swish or scape poop.  If you don't want to attach one to your toilet they make sprayers that attach to the sink like the QDSpray or you can use a detachable showerhead (and a bucket if you shower isn't close to the toilet).

I keep a roll of toilet paper on the changing table to get any chucks of poop still on baby and then put it in the diaper to all go in the toilet when I'm done.  There usually isn't enough on the cloth wipe to need to spray the wipe.

  • I just got my sprayer last week and LOVE!
I thought I could delay the sprayer a while longer after starting solids a couple weeks ago...and I was wrong. The dunk and swish thing grosses me out, so I opted for taking them outside with a hose until I got the sprayer.
When I got it, I installed it myself within 10 minutes and used it right away. I was so happy to find that those "spray guard" things seem to be unnecessary as well. As long and you aim down and away (just like with the hose) the water and poop go in the other direction. Amazing. :)

  • I did dunk and swish for a while and it wasn't too awful, and my kids seem to have the worst pb poo. I have a pair of rubber gloves I put on before I start trying to remove the poo from the diaper so that I don't have to touch it when I wring it out or anything. I don't have an actual diaper sprayer, mine is a thing that attaches to the shower head and is designed to be used to bathe your dog. Luckily our shower is right next to the toilet so it works out. I rarely spray wipes, I try to wipe the worst of it with the diaper itself.

  • I haven't been able to figure out how I would attach a sprayer to our British toilet, so I have a Diaper Duck. Actually, I have 2. My first one broke and the company gave me a free replacement, so I use the unbroken one to soak and wring, and the broken one is just the perfect size and shape for scraping. They travel easily, too. And, our toilets here use tons of water per flush, so dunking and swishing through a flush is actually pretty effective.

If we are still diapering when we move back to the states, I'll probably want a sprayer. We have low-flow toilets at our home in the states, so a sprayer would probably be really helpful.
  • P mostly poops in the toilet and has since he started solids. 2 weeks ago things were really busy and we were out tons so there were poopy diapers. On top of that our bathrooms are also being redone so my sprayer was out of commission. I tried to dunk and swish, but I felt like I just wasn't getting enough off, so I took a bucket into our utility sink and used the kitchen sprayer on it then flushed everything and washed the bucket. Even with only a handful of dirty diapers I wanted my sprayer back ASAP. I don't think you will regret buying one.

  • I definitely need the spray pal with mine. Maybe my son isn't pooling correctly, but it gets into little creases in the fabric and a one-direction spray isn't going to cut it. Sprayer. Spray Pal. Gloves. Golden.
  • Yep, wrap it up, put it in the wet bag, take it home.  If it's ploppable, obv I plop it in the public toilet.  But otherwise take it home.  It actually works out really well because the diaper absorbs more of the liquid, and it's more likely to be ploppable-ish when you get home.

I know this sounds dumb, but....What do you do when you are out and about?  Do you put the dirty diaper in the wet bag and just spray when you get home?  It's seems like a hassle -- and really gross -- if you have to dunk in a public toilet.
When we go out and about, we either use disposable liners or disposables diapers, depending on how long we're going to be gone.  Usually liners.
