Milk/Food FTM Question

DD is currently BF or fed with bottle of BM. While in the care of others while I'm at work, she eats around 12-14 oz from 8am-5pm. I'm assuming she'll start needing more as she gets older, right? Secondly, when we start her on solid foods at 6 months, I'm assuming she gets the bulk of her nutrition from BM still. Does she eat the same amount of milk at that point? More or less? Can someone explain how this works?

Re: Milk/Food FTM Question

  • Every baby is different.  DS never went above 4 oz per bottle feeding with BM.  The composition of breastmilk will change over the year, so you don't really have to adjust volumes at all, your body will automatically adjust and produce for the changing needs of an older infant.

When you add in food it is not their main source of calories.  Basically at 6 months we added a few tablespoons of cereal per day and then some fruits and veggies, but I can't say that he was really interested in solids until closer to 8 months.  Basically at that point his milk intake didn't change, up or down, but the solids added the other calories he was needing.

  • So up until the age of 8 months they are getting the bulk of their calories from milk still? How many oz do they typically eat between 8-12 months? When do you *typically* stop giving breast milk?

  • Typically people switch from BM/formula to whole cow milk at a year. Just follow your baby's cues. They will naturally start dropping feeds as they eat more solids. Your pedi should be able to guide you as you go as well. Some people choose to do extended breast feeding but even then it varries greatly. Some only comfort nurse morning/night, some still nurse on demand. There is no right or wrong because babies are so different.

DD never took more than 4 oz bottles (3 of those at daycare usually). For a long time she still took that and ate some baby food. It was a long while before food was more a part of her diet than breastmilk. It just kind of naturally changed too with no help on my part.

  • We did baby led weaning and follow the idea that food the first year is just for fun. The majority of nutrition will still come from BM/formula
