I Need Food Help

Okay, so I feel like I'm getting a handle on working out. Week before last, I worked out 3x. Last week, I worked out 4x. This is really, really good for me, considering my pain. I feel good about it. I don't feel great about my eating. It's not that I'm eating badly, I just don't think I'm eating enough of the right things. I'd love some suggestions.

Here's a typical day for me (today):

Breakfast: Coffee with sugar and a splash of cream. Oatmeal with apples.

Lunch: Mixed greens salad with mini heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, bell peppers. Shredded grilled chicken and 1 tsp of Annie's dressing to top. Baby carrots and blueberries on the side

Snack: Odwalla cranberry/orange nourishing bar

Dinner: Quesadilla with 1 whole wheat tortilla, filled with sharp cheddar, shredded grilled chicken, avocado. Corn on the cob & salsa on the side.

Snack: 1 square of dark chocolate, 1 glass of whole milk

What can I be doing differently? I have been good about not eating out (no $$, ha) and we typically don't do fast food.

Your day actually looks well rounded. You could switch to low fat milk and maybe have fruit for a snack instead of the odwalla bar? Also watch portions even for healthy food. That's the most important thing.

If you really want to, you can count calories.

Eta: nvm on the low fat ;)

  • That sounds like not enough food to me. I eat 1544 on days I don't work out and 1853 on days I do. I think protein at breakfast is important. And you could probably add a few large snacks in between meals to make up the extra calories you need. :)

  • 1. You are making me feel bad about my poor food choices lately. I need to do better.

    2. I have no background in this and I'm sure people will disagree but you might want to check out intermittent fasting or leangains. I've been about 40 lbs overweight for 10 years. After my second I started IF - basically I don't eat until noon and I'm down 80 lbs from pregnancy for over a year now. I struggled for so long and finally found something that works for me. It may not be for you especially because you are already doing everything right.

  • Can I ask your height/weight? I could give you a more solid answer on the calories. Also what do you do for working out?

@dashofreality‌ thanks! I don't think I could fast until noon because my blood sugar would bottom out and I'd probably pass out.
Fair enough -the coffee keeps me upright ~O)

  • There's a very good chance you should be getting closer to 1700 a day. At least on active days. You are active enough that you seem to need more and it seems to be slowing your metabolism. (I'm studying to be a dietitian, I'm not just guessing just so everyone knows ;) )
  • Hi there fellow shorty :) your calories are definitely not too low. Being under 5ft tall is a whole new ball game that most people don't need to consider. Your day looks good but I agree with adding more protein as a snack.

  • I would suggest adding some protein at breakfast. Eggs? Ditch the bars as they are usually packed full of sugar and calories, try greek yogurt (plain otherwise all the sugar makes it a carb instead of a protein) or another source of protein (hard boiled egg maybe?) and can you swap the milk in the evening for something with more protein?

Overall though I think you're doing pretty well!

  • What do you drink through the day other than the milk and coffee?

Make sure you're not eating right before your bedtime too, that will help with proper digestion.

  • If you want to drop weight safely and quickly try this diet plan for 4 weeks.

I know several that have done it and it works very well as long as you are strict with yourself and do exactly what it says when. It's not that hard and there is not any special food. It works by the chemical reactions of the specific foods and your body.

  • Geeze. I was just tossing it out there if anyone wanted the info.

I know several that have used it and it worked for them. Like any other diet, if you go back to the way you were eating after you lose the weight, you are going to gain it back. If you don't want to follow the diet, then don't. It's that simple.

Is this considered a healthy diet? I am not a nutritionist and never claimed to be one so I can not answer that.

If what you are doing now is not working then you need to try something different.

  • @spotco2 I can answer your question. No. It is not a healthy diet. Not even a little. And they are right, as soon as you eat normally (even healthy normal) your body will hold on to every pound because you have severely restricted your metabolism.
