Cloth Diapering

Help me pull the trigger on this CD order!

Hi ladies! My first baby is due on September 7. I've been mostly lurking here for a couple of months and I want to thank you for all the awesome info and for answering my previous questions!

After a lot of research, I think it will be best for us to mostly stick to flats and covers (tiny washer, no dryer, humid climate, no outdoor drying space). I've got my orders all ready to go but I'm nervous that I'm missing something or not getting enough changes. Could you look over my list for my newborn stash and let me know if I'm good to go? Some of the items were gifted to me so I already have them. I just need a little reassurance before I click checkout! Thanks in advance!

Changes:
Flats: 6 OsoCozy unbleached flats (gift)- want to order 24 more
Prefolds: 6 size 1 OsoCozy unbleached prefolds (gift)
Covers: 1 RAR nb cover (gift) want to order 2 more RAR nb covers, 1 Thirsties xs aplix, 1 Thirsties size 1 duo wrap

Supplies:
5 pack snappis
2 6 packs of pins (gift)
2 pail liners (Planet Wise)
1 cheapo garbage can from Target
2 diaper bag wet bags (skip hop brand)
30 flannel/terry home made cloth wipes (gift)
12 Bumkins flannel wipes (gift)
a roll of Bummis Biosoft liners

Re: Help me pull the trigger on this CD order!

  • I would maybe add another newborn cover or two... Bummis Super Brite in x-small is awesome (and a bit cheaper than the others).  And more than just 1 thirsties duo size 1 - you never know how long your newborn stuff is going to last.  Baby could be bigger than expected :)

    What about CD-safe diaper cream?

I'm not sure about skip hop wet bags - not sure I even know they made them!  Do they get good reviews online?
  • Thanks for the Bummis suggestion! I'll add that and another Thirsties Duo to my order.

As for diaper cream I was thinking I'd just use coconut oil? I thought I read that you don't really need a diaper cream unless they get a rash.

I was going to get the Skip Hop wet bags because they match the cute diaper bag I was given-- and they're pretty inexpensive. BUT after skimming some reviews I think it will be worth it to pay a little more for the Planet Wise wet bags for the diaper bag.

  • I agree that more covers is a good idea. for nb, I like more like 7-8 covers, and more of the the thirsties duos are a good idea, they will last much longer.

  • Just want to jump in and say don't get a Skip Hop wetbag! I got one though Amazon's review program and it sucks. The inner is made of plastic and it so hard to stuff back in when it agitates out in the wash. The plastic has also started splitting after a few months use. They're cute but not great for heavy use.

  • I'm a relative newbie (1st baby a little over 3 months old now) but from my recent experience ...
    - more covers as pp have said. I found that runny newborn poop got onto them pretty often making it necessary to wash the covers. (Since it would get onto elastic or some nook/cranny where you cant fully wipe it off) and the elastic can take a while to dry though the rest is quite fast. I have 11 covers and would feel OK with maybe two fewer but maybe not even. Though DD was pooping super -frequently and in quantity until about 2 weeks ago. Now that its less maybe 6-8 covers could suffice. Maybe.

My DD was and is small/thin and thirsties size one with snaps fit her well and pretty early on. And they expand nicely so seem like good value. The bummis extra small was a better size when she was brand new but I didn't have any diaper that fit well in it. Even gmd newborn size prefolds were too big. You might get around that with flats though.

    - I know the snaps/aplix debate is neverending but for my LO I can only use aplix covers with fitted diapers - don't adjust tight enough around legs to contain poop with prefolds even jellyrolled. Though maybe there is a fold with flats that would stay tighter around legs?

-you could save money and get fewer snappis since really you just reuse the same one (off old diaper onto new one). So 2 or 3 is plenty even to account for if one broke or got gross in a blowout and you didn't want to just rinse/reuse immediately.

-for your diaper bag wetbag - i haven't used a small planetwise but my large takes forever to dry. If small is same twolayer design you mught need more than two to rotate unless your outings are rare. I like my swaddlebees bag for diaper bag use (and due to cute giraffes!); don't know if kangacare has a small bag but for at home I love their large. Both are single layer so dry faster than pw. I've ordered a couple other kinds to try out and because I need more but can't say if they are also good or not.

-definitely use something to protect against diaper rash right from beginning (day one in hospital) or at least after maybe 2nd meconium diaper when it might be ready to switch to actual poop. That early newborn runny poop can be pretty harsh (acidic I think). We didn't know that and didn't use any ointment and hospital didnt provide or suggest any though they provided so much of the othet necessiities) and she got a truly heartbreaking rash in her first few days (just around anus- from initial contact with poop not from going too long between changes) that took a couple weeks to clear up. That is my #1 "wish I had known" from the early days of being a FTM. I don't know if coconut oil would be enough. Others could advise on that. If you use disposables in the hospital you could use aquaphor which worked great. Or maybe the earth mama angel baby bottom balm which is oily would work. Or something else?. Zinc oxide based ones were not so helpful for my LO.

-osocozy prefolds are nice but pretty big (even the small size) so might not fit for a while if your baby is on the small side.

    -good luck!

  • P is 12.5 weeks and has not had diaper cream or coconut oil on her bum one single time in her life so far.  So no, you don't have to definitely use something from the beginning.  Or possibly ever.  My toddler rarely uses any either.
Other than more covers, you are probably set for at least a good start.  As you go along you can see what you need more of.  Side note, the bummis liners are fine for the pb poo stage, but don't bother with them while LO is on breast milk or formula only.  I like to use my liners when I travel somewhere and don't have access to my sprayer for my toddler's poo diapers.
Don't be anxious.  Just pull the trigger!  Then later, buy MORE!

  • I didn't use a snappi for my newborn. But I used flats. So I sold my size 1 snappi.

He's 3 and half months and I still use nothing.

I'm sure it will change once he starts becoming mobile.
  • I also agree with a couple more covers. I only had 6 for my baby and had to buy more. Especially b/c he outgrew the NB size very quickly.

  • Thank you for all the feedback! I'm so excited for everything to come in and to get started on my prep and set up my diaper changing station.

I'm happy the advice was leaning toward more covers-- I was trying to be conservative but I had to cut a lot of cute stuff out to do that. Now I get to add it all back in!!

This board has been so helpful- I would have been pretty overwhelmed by the whole process if you all hadn't been here :) I'm looking forward to flaunting my stash when we get going! Thanks again!
  • If you are overwhelmed by the price, you could use a pack or two of flour sack towels instead of some of the osocozy flats.

But yeah, pp covered it all! Have fun! It's exciting to get fluff mail!
