Making yogurt

I'm a lurker mostly but I think I remember seeing someone here who made yogurt. DS is allergic to milk and I bought some made from coconut milk and he LOVED it! Problem is coconut milk yogurt isn't easily accessible. From my google search it seems pretty easy to make. Anyone have a particular recipe or tips?

Re: Making yogurt

  • If you do buy a culture, just make sure that it doesn't contain dairy.  I looked into cultures when I was dairy free and they were all cultivated in dairy, so it's wasn't an option for me.

I recently saw a recipe for making yogurt where you add yogurt to the milk and the cultures in the yogurt will make the rest of the milk yogurt, too.  I bet you could try that with coconut yogurt and coconut milk.  I can't find the recipe, though.  Sorry.

  • I know someone on one of the paleo blogs did this @stoneycakes‌. She kept hers in the oven with the light on to be warm enough.

I saw this one and wondered if it would work using the oven light...actually, I think my oven light may not be working.

@Mapleme The link tj posted, they use a probiotic as the starter. I have some Cultrelle that is dairy free. Do you think that would work? The cultures listed on the NE Cheesemaking site all contain dairy. I could probably use it since we aren't completely dairy free - I am trying to avoid it as much as I can, though. :-/
