Surgery worries

We found out today that Cooper will have to have her tonsils and adenoids removed. We scheduled it for the end of September so that h will be home from Alaska when they do it.
I am a nervous wreck worried about them putting her under. Her tonsils are so large that they touch. Her appetite has dropped and she's developed sleep apnea because of it so there really is not other option to just remove them

She will be in the hospital over night. I have about a month to mentally year myself up for this but any advice is welcomed. For those that have had toddler under surgery I would love advice for recovery and hospital stay and anything you can think of. I'm worried about my baby!

Re: Surgery worries

  • So sorry to hear that she is so uncomfortable and has to have surgery so young.  Usually they try to wait until kids are a bit older to have surgery, but it sounds like you don't have any other option.  Boo!

Just for piece of mind, maybe you can get a second opinion if you haven't already done so.  Personally when it comes to surgery, I always want to make certain that I get two opinions before going under the knife.  Maybe there is something they can do besides surgery to see if things get better first?  Just brainstorming.  Good luck regardless of what you end up doing to make her feel better.

  • No advice but I hope everything goes well. I am glad your H can be with you and help entertain Cooper. PP's has come good ideas especially with the new books and toys.
  • You might want to add some color wonder markers and coloring books, magnetic puzzles (melissa&doug makes some) and maybe some small things of play doh.

  • Cortlandt has had tubes done twice and the second time they took his adenoids. Every kid coming out of anesthesia is different but Cortlandt is a BEAR so I have learned to have something to distract him from the IV ready like a video on my phone or a new toy. If you can bring Cooper's favorite toy or lovey they let them take them back. Our hospital also let me go back with Camden for his surgery until he was asleep which helped us both!

Prayers coming your way for a fast recovery!
  • Y'all are so good. I'm going to start collecting little things for our hospital bag. So many good ideas. I am worried about the iv though. This kid won't even leave a band aid on for more then 30 seconds so that part will be hard. I've got to get myself mentally prepared for her being under. I'm such a baby

  • At 13 months my DS had tubes and although it was in an out patient procedure and not overnight they still put him under. I was so nervous!!! A year later and nonstop ear infections they are talking about revision with removal of adenoids and I completely understand your fears. It is a nail biting experience. :(
