Pregnant after a Loss

What if betas more than double?

I'm 4w4d today and my first beta on 8/12 was 201. Two days later, on 8/14, they were 489.

I got tested again this morning, expecting them to be 2 times higher (like maybe 1900 range) since we waited 4 days this time, instead of 2 days. But, today my HCG was 3,451.

Is this normal? Anyone's betas double faster than every 48 hours? I know it could be a sign of twins, but also molar, which scares the bejeezus out of me.

  • Thank you @Grailseeker14. That makes me feel better. I was thinking normal doubling was 48 hours.

  • I haven't heard from the doctor yet, and won't until tomorrow since she is out of the office today. My blood results are posted instantly online, which makes it really dangerous for OCD people like me. Seriously was checking the website every 20 minutes after I got my blood drawn this morning.

  • My 1st 4 rounds of betas (taken from 15-22dpo) were all under 34 hour double time. Once I hit 2,000, doubling time went up to 64 hours (IIRC). I agree with PP that if your Dr isn't concerned, try not to worry!

  • Totally normal! The average is 48hours, but really they like to see the doubling in 48 hours or less early on. Your betas look beautiful! Also, molar pregnancies typically have betas that are MUCH higher (think 100,000 early on), so no need to worry about that.

  • Your betas sound fine to me. There is a wide range of "normal" when it comes to betas. Congrats on rising betas!

  • I had really high and fast growing betas with my current pregnancy.  It wasn't molar and it wasn't multiples, although my RE was initially concerned.

If they are worried about the beta levels, they will check you.

But, like others said your numbers seem quite normal.

  • I had really fast growing betas on this pregnancy (see siggy) and when my RE got the results the first thing she said to me was "O shit its twins". We have found out since then that there is only one in there. :)

  • My beta level for the pregnancy with my son started really high (mid 400's in the fourth week) and then more than doubled each time. I also panicked because I assumed it meant something was wrong or twins which of course would have been a blessing. However, I am currently 28 weeks with one baby boy and all has been very well so far. I think each pregnancy can have different hormone levels. The fact they are rising is a great thing and an early ultrasound will be a better indicator.
  • Thanks ladies... My OB called and they are going to have me come in for an u/s on Friday as a precaution. I've never had one done that early before! I didn't think they would even be able to see anything?

As far as twins... My great grandmother had twins and my grandmother miscarried twins, so there is a family history. But, I'm just hoping for a healthy pregnancy that sticks .
