Teaching and Pregnant

2»

Re: Teaching and Pregnant

  • - I teach 6th grade math.

    - My due date for now is April 19 but I go back next Friday to try to confirm that.

    - I will tell the school nurse on our first day back just so she is aware, but I don't plan on telling my principal or department head until the end of October.

    - With my last pregnancy I was put on emergency strict bed rest at 29 weeks which lasted for 7 weeks, then LO was born a week later. I got the call for this at lunchtime on our first day back to school ("go home. Now. Lay down. Stay there. Seriously"). I really hope to avoid bed rest this time around as our sanity and bank accounts couldn't afford it.
Also, my major concern is probably what everyone worries about: having a full term, healthy pregnancy and baby!!

  • what do you teach?
    • I teach an amazing group of 2nd and 3rd graders... Can't wait to get back to them in the next couple if weeks!

    When are you due?
    • Our first U/S appt isn't until September 3, so we won't know for sure but around. April 8th.

    When are you telling administration?
    • This is a tough one for us, my hubby has a family history of miscarriages related to a chromosome issue nadir is unknown if he has it at this time as well. Hoping we can try to find out just "to know" but that will definitely affect when we tell everyone.

What concerns, questions, etc. do you have?
    • The biggest worry for us is the balanced translocation. We plan to tell those closest to us after our first u/s but worry about telling too many before having some answers
    • In terms of work, worried about long term sub plan expectations and my littles getting a kind, creative, and compassionate person to end the year with them. I want them to have an amazing sub and enjoy their entire school year! Also worried over when to tell students/parents...
  • I teach 3rd grade :-)

I'm due April 6, during my spring break.

I'm concerned with how the administration will handle my news since this is only my second year at this school. My principal is awesome and extremely supportive though. There were four pregnancies in our building alone last year. I don't know when to tell her though! I go for my 8wk u/s on Tuesday.
  • I'm a brand new high school physics teacher.
    I'm due April 20th.
I have no idea when to tell the administration- I signed my contract 2 days before my positive test, so I still don't know who to talk to. I literally found out I was pregnant at the end of my first week of teaching. It's a lot to take in...
I have some major concerns, like being able to take enough time off to make it to midwife appointments and having to pee all day on my no-planning-period days. And the ever present spectre of mc. And to top it all off, I caught the inevitable new-teacher cold. I can't tell what is a cold symptom and what's pregnancy!
  • I teach MS Language Arts. I'm due April 21st and plan to wait to tell my principal closer to 12-13 weeks. The week in due until the last week of school (exams) is exactly 6 weeks, so I am debating only taking five weeks and being there for exams which are half days. I'm worried about a competent sub and long term sub plans as well. Such a daunting task to have that all prepared!
  • I teach 7th grade ELA and Design. I'm due 4/15. I told my principal on Wednesday because I'll have to leave early one day next week for my first US appt. My biggest concern right now is trying not to puke in front of my students. I've just started getting waves of nausea, pretty mild so far, but I cannot think of anything worse. I certainly do not want to tell them yet.
  • what do you teach? 7th grade English
When are you due? early April but may have a RCS at end of March
When are you telling administration? I told them about a week after I found out. Our school has all new admins and we have been working hard on a new computer initiative that I am lead on.
What concerns, questions, etc. do you have? I really hope I can hold out until Spring Break and take off the rest of the year. I am worried that the stress of this year might be harmful to my pregnancy and that my paycheck will take a big hit because I don't have enough sick days saved up. (I used them all up with DS).
Edited because I am an English teacher and that's what we do.

  • what do you teach? Computer. Grades K-5
When are you due? April 1st
When are you telling administration? Holding off telling as long as possible. Hoping to make it to December if I can. I am on the bigger side to begin with, so I am figuring I can hide a bump for a while and pass it off as just putting on weight. ;)
What concerns, questions, etc. do you have? I am just trying to focus on making it through each day right now. So tired!!

  • What do you teach: grade 4
When are you due: April 23 for now
When will you tell admin: prob at about 8-10 weeks. I'd like to have their support early on and will feel more at ease once they know but don't want to do it right away because im at a new school this year and want to make an impression as a teacher and not just a prego-saurus first
Worries: getting colds without being able to take meds. Cause well kids are germy. And having to leave with 8 weeks left of school and how much I will have to get done before they bring in the person covering my leave.
  • Teaching fifth grade math and due April 10.
First full time teaching job, first pregnancy, so this should be an interesting year. The kids haven't even started yet, just faculty, and I'm already exhausted when I get home lol. I'm waiting to tell my principal until after first OB appt (I'm 7 weeks now, first appt is in about 2 weeks).

Hope everyone had a great start to the school year :)
  • I teach seventh grade reading in a new district and due April 7th.

Just an FYI out there: We started school this past week. Every Friday I do a high five Friday and give high fives while they leave my room. Big mistake! Even though I wash my hands a lot, I came down with a major cold this weekend that I'm guessing came from that. Looks like fist bump Friday will have to do instead! Anyone else got their first cold yet? I'm guessing as teachers we're going to get a lot of them this year. I hadn't realized how the immune system kind of lets up during pregnancy until I started researching it this morning!
  • @erkyoung‌... I teach first grade and just finished our first week. Woke up Saturday with a cold!!! Totally miserable because I haven't been able to call my doctor to see what I can take for it. Feel your pain!!
  • I teach biology. I'm due April 27th. I already told my principal and department. They are very supportive. Everyone told me not to incase I miscarry, but if that happened I would need the support. I'm a very open person though. This will be my second baby. My daughter will turn 2 September 18th. I'm worried about morning sickness because it was VERY bad with my first. I'll have to see how it goes. I'm 6 weeks on Monday.
  • I teach AP English I I I (juniors) and journalism.
    I am 7 weeks..due on April 17th.

The necessary people at work new at first for two reasons. 1) I was leaving staff development for the very first ultrasound. 2) after reason 1 came the realization that is was twins...I had horrible MS that meant the possibility of me skipping meeting go or leaving classes unattended. ..and the fact that having multiples almost guarantees me leaving early for bed rest. However, everyone has been super supportive and annoyingly cautious.
My students know because some helped me get my room ready and it spread like wild fire.
Worries: Leaving early is terrifying. I plan on teaching from home bc by kids have the big exam the first week of May. I also run three organizations so I don't want to leave them hanging.
  • Little late here- can't believe how many teachers are in this group!

    I teach 1/2 combo of 46 kids.

    Due: 3/31

I am holding off telling admin. As it is my first year in this position. (Not a planned). Nerveous on how he will take and and the parent community will feel.

Most concerned about long term sub willing to mentor other coteacher and handle 46 first and second graders!

Looking forward to a 5 month summer with the baby.
  • What do you teach? 5th grade, new to the grade and school!

When are you due? April 27th!!

When are you telling administration? No idea! Hopefully, after my 12 week appt. I told my teaching partners in hopes of pee break help!

What concerns, questions, etc. do you have? Making it to 12 weeks. Quite nervous about a miscarriage. Keeping fingers crossed at exactly 6 weeks!
I am concerned about bathroom breaks and having to snack in the classroom. Also, about having a long term sub seeing as in have never had one before... So excited!!
  • I'm an art teacher for K-5, and I just started at a new elementary school. Due April 3. Plan to tell admin after my ultrasound on weds, or whenever it seems like a good time after that. I'm worried about her reaction but glad there are laws in place to support us. Of course lesson planning for the end if the year seems really stressful now
  • 1st day back today.....definitely didn't drink enough water today
  • Yes! It's hard. I just carry my 24oz cup with me everywhere and set a goal to drink 2-3 throughout the day.

  • @Lilzeezee‌ same here, I paid for it when I got home... I felt awful and crampy. Pounded water like it was my job on the ride and at home. Lesson learned...make time to stay hydrated!
