Baby Names

Allison and Addison

SIL is pregnant. One of the main names she likes is Allison. The only problem with it is that her dd's name is Addison so they are very similar in spelling. I actually didn't even notice it until my brother brought it up.

They still really like the name though. What are your thoughts on names that LOOK similar but don't necessarily SOUND similar?

Re: Allison and Addison

  • I agree with PP. I can't imagine what it would be like to be called from another room and not know who it's for. A nickname for one of them would be a must.

  • Hm, maybe it's just me and SIL. I don't think they sound the same really.

They look way too similar AND sound way too similar (....how do they not necessarily sound similar? Huh?!) . The only difference is a double L instead of a double D. They sound almost identical.

    Terrible idea. It is like naming your kids: Rob/Bob, Jim/Kim, Allen/Ellen, Billy/Willy/Lilly, Ned/Ted/Fred/Ed, Chloe/Zoe, Aidan/Braden....

I would feel bad for the youngest, that their parents couldn't put a little more effort into naming the second child.
That's kind of rude. They are putting a lot of thought in to the name! It just happens to be one of the names she likes. She has other names on the list.

How exactly do you pronounce those names? I'm honestly curious.

  • I agree, they both look and sound similar. The only difference between the names is those 2 letters.

    AD uh son

    What am I missing?

I agree that it's a terrible idea. You wanted people's thoughts, that's not rude.

  • Those names are way too similar.

  • The names are way too similar for my tastes. What about Alice?

  • Way too similar in sound and spelling. Please tell us how you pronounce it, because I can't think of a way for them to not sound similar. I'd nix Allison and go back to the drawing board.

  • They sound way too similar.  If she has other names on her list, it's a darn good reason to cross off Allison. There are several names I like, perfectly fine names on their own, that I wouldn't use solely because they sound too much like one of my children's names.  I get tongue-tied enough calling them by name just because they both have stressed syllables starting with L.  I would never keep Addison and Allison straight.

  • Way too matchy.  How do they not sound similar?  I'd go back to the drawing board for DD2.  If they must be matchy, at least choose a different A name that isn't so similar in sound and spelling.

  • Way too similar!

  • Same first letter and ending sound - they're way too close for siblings.

It reminds me of Leah from Teen Mom naming her kids Aleeah and Aliannah...they're way too close (and the spellings are awful!)
