Baby Name Battle

So my husband and I are in the middle of a battle and I'm looking for opinions. What do you guys think about the name Caia Alazne (KY-ah Ah-LAZ-knee)? Last name is Torres. Hubby hates it, I'm taken with it. Caia was a Roman goddess and Alazne means miracle in Basque. Thanks!

P.S. I don't plan on naming our child something my husband hates. I thought this was a given but, from the comments I got, obviously it was not.

Re: Baby Name Battle

  • I couldn't go with a name my husband hated. It's his kid too.

  • It's a mouthful and I never would've come close to pronouncing it right without your help. However, I do like the sound of Caia. I would usually say if you love it go for it but since your husband hates it then it's sort of off the table right? It doesn't matter if we like it, it's him that has to like it.

  • I personally don't like names where you would have to tell everyone how it is pronounced. It's just nms.
Also, I believe both parents have to agree, baby will be both of yours. Even though I sometimes try to pull the "I am carrying him, I should have the ultimate choice" but I don't think that is right :) I just try to make him like my names, so far it hasn't worked. Lol!

  • I thought the Greek goddess was Gaia, not Caia?

Either way, I'm not crazy about it. If you love it, keep it on your list and hubby may warm up to, but also keep looking for options you both like.

  • I like Caia/Kaia, but if your husband doesn't I think you need to let it go and find something you both like. My husband hates my favourite name too, so I have sympathy for you!

  • Thank you @strawberrytree for the sympathy. :) And obviously "battle" wasn't the right word. I would never name our child something my husband really didn't like. That's kind of a no-brainer, people. We aren't fighting about it. I like it, he doesn't. Thus the battle of winning one another over. Just asking for opinions, guys.

@megbmeg, Caia Caecilia, also called Gaia Caecilia, is a Roman Goddess of Fire, the Hearth, Healing, and Women.
  • Caia is NMS, I prefer Gaia (still NMS). I don't care for Alazne. Are you or your DH Basque? I ask, because I prefer to steer clear of names that need to be spelled out, unless it's part of my cultural heritage.

I was skimming through post titles and thought the same thing!

OP you originally just stated that you and your husband were in a battle over a name that he hates but you still wanted opinions on. This to me sounded like the name was/is still on the table even though he hates it. No big if that's not the case- it was just easy to misunderstand!

For the record I think Caia is pretty. I think Caia Alazne is a bit much though. It probably doesn't help that I don't care for Alazne.

  • Caia is nice, sounds pretty but the middle name I couldn't get behind....maybe the first name and a different middle name your hubby likes??
  • The fact that you had to specify how to pronounce the name is a red flag for me.  Caia is pretty, but I would choose a mn that's easier to say/spell.
  • If you have to write out for us the phonetic pronunciation of the name then it's a no. Your kid is going to have to do that every time someone tries to say her name.

  • I like Caia. I have only seen it spelled Kaya and I kind of prefer that. I don't like the middle at all but it is a middle name so it's fine
  • I think Caia is nice but will inevitably be confusing in terms of pronunciation/spelling/getting confused with Gaia, which is a more familiar mythological name.  I like oddball MNs if they have significance, so if you're honoring Basque heritage I'm all for Alazne.  Whatever we think, though, I'm not sure what the point is in asking if your DH dislikes it, unless you think our opinions will sway him somehow.  DH hates a lot of names I like, and I just figure the opinions of my Internet friends (he knows how much I love you guys) aren't going to persuade him if I can't.

  • I like Caia, Alazne is NMS at all
