How similar/close should twin names be? 210 votes

I like it when they're a little matching, like same initial or vowel sounds

Should be complementary to each other, but not similar (perhaps similar meaning or something)

Should AVOID any kind of matching, because that's gross

Who cares? Just pick two good names

Depends on whether they're the same sex or not (explain below)

Re: How similar/close should twin names be?

  • I voted for complementary because I like it when siblings in general (not just twins) have names with the same feel or style - both classic, trendy, preppy, old fashioned, whatever.

If I had twins though I would make sure their names started with different letters.

  • I picked "who cares" but I'm really somewhere between that and "should be complementary". I don't care about meanings too much but I do like sibling names to have the same feel/style.

  • I picked complementary. I like it when names are different, but have a similar feel (so not Starlight and Beatrice, but Beatrice and Josephine).

  • I picked complementary because I think they should sound good when said aloud together. No theme necessarily but similar style (ex Sophie and Charlotte vs Sophie and Braylynn).

  • I'd say no more similar than siblings who aren't twins. Just pick two names that you like

  • I voted complementary....they should sound good together but not be matchy!!

Option 2. We have twin boys and their names fall into that category. Totally not matchy but definitely similar in style, both first names (strong, classic names) and middle names (Biblical/Old Testament names, with meanings we loved).

I really hate matchy names for multiples. You already deal with people lumping them together rather than treating them as individuals; IMO, giving them matchy "twinset" names only encourages that.

Plus matchy twin names is becoming more and more a dated practice.

  • I also agree with pp's that I like them to be *somewhat* similar in style. A "frilly" name for one twin with a unisex name for her sister is an odd pairing to me, or a classic name with a cre8ively spelled trendy name, etc.

  • I can't stand matchy twin names. No Emma and Ella, Vito and Guido, Bill and Will, Hannah and Anna.
We are going with two traditional names, but that is as matchy as it gets.

  • I voted for complimentary. I don't mind very subtle matchiness, I'm guilty of liking it if both names having a twined letter (ex: Phillip and Matthew) but that otherwise don't 'match'.

But none of my hypothetical twin combinations even do that.

  • I voted for complimentary. We are having twins and looking at the top twin names is cringe-worthy. They are very matchy matchy and often biblical names. I am looking for names that are complimentary in origin and meaning.

  • Complimentary/similar in style.  Not matchy.
  • IMO they should share the first initial but not middle initial and not sound the same or rhyme at all. for twins i don't think shared first initial is matchy but for sib sets it's nms. But most of this is just everyone's opinions,
