TTC After a Loss

Option after two miscarriages

I'm a newby, hoping I am doing this right. I am currently waiting for my miscarriage to happen. I had a 7 weeks ultrasound and there was no heartbeat. That was two weeks ago and my body hasn't passed it naturally in those two weeks. I've elected to use the medication you insert into the vagina (misoprostol) instead of a D & C. I am doing that today. This will be my second miscarriage since February. Both ended at the first ultrasound appointment with no viable heartbeat and both I've used the medication to pass it. At my follow up appointment yesterday options were discussed as to what I could to figure out what was happening and possibly prevent future miscarriages. The doctor mentioned a sonohystogram and taking progesterone after ovulation. Has anyone done either or both of these?

Re: Option after two miscarriages

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Sadly I have no experience with testing, because they wait for 3 up here, and none of mine even made it to an ultrasound since they also won't see you until 10 weeks up here. However I hope you get some answers and that this board is as helpful for you as it was for me!

  • No advice on the sonohystogram but after my first loss and due to other previous medical history my doctor did do a thrombophilia panel looking for a potential clotting disorder as well as some autoimmune stuff.

I think each doctors recs are different because they know each of us and our medical history. Heres hoping after your SHG and progestorene it leads to a H&H 9 months :)

  • I just experienced my second loss and when I saw my doctor she just told me that it's fairly common and that they wouldn't start looking at things until I experienced a third loss. She did take blood from me (they're looking for a thyroid issue) and if there is anything that doesn't check out she said she would call. She offered me progesterone as well but told me that when I get my next BFP to call and she will call in a script. Good luck and sorry for your losses.

  • Welcome to the board. I'm sorry for your losses.
  • I have no advice, but I'm sorry for your losses. I hope you can figure out the next step and get some answers. Welcome to the board.
  • Thank you all!  I am so sorry for all of your losses.

My husband and I decided to do testing if we have a third miscarriage because my insurance doesn't pay for anything.  I am leaning towards the SHG and progesterone.  My doctor recommended taking the progesterone two days after intercourse.  I've been monitoring my ovulation since November using the OPK.

I am lucky that I have been able to conceive and implant, it's just figuring out why I am not able to carry.  I tend to be a stressed person so my plan is to eat better and start with mild exercise.  I will also take the progesterone.  My doctor never mentioned anything about having my levels tested first to see if they were low.  I didn't even think to ask her about testing.

Again thank you all for letting me share my story and welcoming me!

  • i'm sorry for your losses.  I've been reading up about progesterone, and there's some discrepancies about whether it is a cause for miscarriage or a symptom of a non-viable pregnancy.  It doesn't hurt anything, although it could prolong a non-viable pregnancy.
  • Just a comment about taking progesterone - you need to start 2 days after ovulation not intercourse. If you start it too early I am pretty sure it prevents ovulation. It will also prevent your period so after 2 weeks (my dr tells me 2 wks) stop it if you get a bfn.

    My Ovulation Chart
  • I'm sorry for your loss. I have taken progesterone with my last two losses starting a few days after ovulation. I think it is something you should consider taking. Even though my pregnancies ended I know that my progesterone was good and that the lining in my uterus was thick. It made me feel better knowing I was doing all that I could to help prevent another loss. It is also something I know has helped several women carry full term. I wish you luck as you continue on!
  • I'm so sorry for your losses.  I recently had a hysteroscopy (not the same exactly, but similarly a more detailed scan than a normal u/s), which showed retained tissue.  It could also show some important structural issues if you have them.  I was put on progesterone after our second loss as a precaution.  This last pregnancy did get further, but ended none-the-less due to a T21 abnormality.  I do plan on trying it again when we are ready to TTC.  If your insurance will cover it (or if you're okay paying for it out of pocket), I say it can't hurt.

If you're interested in seeing a specialist... I began seeing an RE after two, and my insurance has covered the majority of it because I am not currently considered "infertile."  Just make sure that whatever testing you get done does not get coded anything related to infertility if your insurance does not cover "promotion of conception" as mine does not.

    Big ((HUGS)) and best wishes!!
  • I'm so sorry for your losses. My Dr will also not do testing until after a third so I am of no help. I hope you find comfort in all these wonderful ladies!

    All are Welcome!

  • I would insist on RPL screening. If that doctor won't go to another doc. Blood clotting disorders, MTHFR, low progesterone etc could very well be the th culprit. No need to keep miscarrying over and over when one or two little pills could stop it.
