Baby Names

Makena

Our first little girl is named Kate and baby sister is due in Oct.  We are leaning toward Makena, after Makena Beach in Maui, as we honeymooned there and have gone back a couple of times.  Variations on the spelling are McKenna and Makenna, both of which seem equally popular.  Makena is the least popular spelling but it seems as though misspellings would be present regardless of how it is spelled.  However I really like Kate and Kena as nicknames together.  What do you think?

Re: Makena

  • Not a fan. I'd try and find a name with another Hawaiian connection perhaps

  • I really don't like it. I agree with PPs that it's trendy and I think it will sound dated later on. It also is not feminine at all to me. What about a Hawaiian name, like PP suggested?

I personally don't like it, but it's not bad!
  • I think it's fine. But I'd definitely go with the most accepted spelling: McKenna.
It's inspired by the beach but spelled like the girl's name :)

  • Not crazy about it, the name itself is very trendy and the alternative spelling will add more confusion. I agree with pp of choosing a Hawaiian name or maybe a name reminiscent of the beach or ocean.

    Good luck!

  • Not a fan. I'd go back to the drawing board and perhaps try and find another link to Hawaii.

  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't McKenna a variation of McKenna, which means "son of Kenneth"? It's not very feminine. I see what you're going for, but I'd pick a different Hawaiian inspired name.

  • I agree with PP's that the name's special meaning will be lost because it has such a trendy and juvenile association.
Again as PP mentioned I would suggest finding a real name with a similar feel to your vacation memories.

  • Makena, in any form, is NMS.  Very juvenile and trendy (not in a good way).  Kate is a classic name and I envision a similar name for a sister.  How about Anna, Claire/Clara, Elizabeth, Sarah, Megan, Charlotte or Lucy?  Just some ideas.

Oh, dreadful name.  Trendy, jacked up spelling that if you spelled it correctly, you'd find it meant "-son of," which makes zero sense on a daughter.

Kate is lovely.  Her sister deserves a name to match it.
This.  Makena looks odd and doesn't match Kate in the least.
  • I'm not a fan of Makena. Seems like a super trendy name thats on the downswing.. I think it will be a very dated "early 2000's" name in the near future.

  • I can appreciate the meaning but I really don't like it, the name, the spelling...
  • Several PP mentioned looking for Hawaiian girls' names; these are some of my favorites:

    Leilani
    Alani

    Love Leilani, I second that
  • I guess there are a few polite people left here but I had apparently forgotten that I stopped coming here for advice because there are so many rude posters.  It is possible to state your opinion without being rude.  Making comments like "hate it" "dreadful" and "eww" is just plain offensive.  I'll go elsewhere...

In case you don't understand the question you asked,  WHAT DO YOU THINK, gives one the option to tell you just that. They told you what they thought. Hate it, dreadful, and ewww are perfectly legit responses to that question.

Now if you didn't want opinions you should have restated the question. Here is an example...Please only tell me if you like this name...Only respond with positive responses...etc..

Better yet if you didn't want the truth you shouldn't have asked! The name is awful and looks like the person choosing it is illiterate. How's that for rude? No matter where you go the name is going to suck.

Oh, and don't let the door hit you in the ass.

  • I like the name, but I prefer the spelling McKenna,

  • I like your Hawaiian spelling. I think it goes pretty well with your other DD's name, too. While I wouldn't choose it myself, I think it's fine.
  • I also agree that it's not nearly as lovely as Kate and that it has a very trendy, becoming-dated vibe that will obscure the Hawaii association. I love the suggestions of a name like Isla, Coraline, Maren/Marina, a Hawaiian name, etc., that would have the meaning but more timeless appeal.

  • How the fuck is saying "I hate that name" offensive?????
  • Sorry, I can't keep from seeing it as the name of the medication
