What to expect-First Neurology Appointment?

We have our first neurology appointment on Monday, and I'm a ball of nerves. Can anyone tell me what theirs was like? If they decide to do testing, they will schedule that for another day, right? It's at a Children's Hospital if that matters. TIA and any good thoughts my way would really be appreciated.

Re: What to expect-First Neurology Appointment?

  • Welcome.  We've been seeing nuero since my oldest was born (more than 4 years ago).
    1) if they do any testing it will be another day, except bloodwork.  That can be done the same day
    2)  They're going to ask you lots and lots of questions.  About his birth, about your pregnancy, when he hit milestones, what you've noticed, etc.
    3) they'll examine him head to toe.  reflexes, skin, head, etc.
    4) If you're going for autism I can't help you there because my kids have genetic neurological issues
    5) they'll discuss they're findings, low/high tone, delayed/hyper reflexes, etc.  and discuss what they would like done

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • Thank you ToastieSimons! He's not going for autism. He's going for not meeting gross motor milestones.

  • My daughter first saw a pediatric neurologist in February due to not meeting milestones and being nonverbal.  We had seen the geneticist prior to that and she had also had a MRI 6 months prior.  He asked us a ton of questions about our daughter.  Questions about her birth, when she hit milestones, my pregnancy with her, etc.  Then he did an eval.  He looked everywhere; her hands, her feet, head size, checked her reflexes, etc.  He then said he wanted a copy of her MRI and that we should mail him a copy and he would call with his results.  That was it.  We never did find anything out except that her MRI was considered normal and her brain showed "mild abnormalities, if any."

  • DS saw the neurologist and the geneticist at the same appointment about 2 weeks ago. They asked a lot of questions about family medical history, pregnancy, and DS health and development. They each did a physical examination. Reflexes, measurements, checked joints, tested him on motor skills. DS thought the appointment was fun. We were given a choice on testing or not so scheduling was left until we called back. His appointment was for not meeting milestones and rapid head growth. Good luck to you.
