Baby Names

Arlo vs Asher

I'm stuck 50/50 on these two names for a boy. I'd like to just decide and be done with the name search!
I like Asher because it means happy/blessed and it's an old name yet fresh sounding. Also I like the potential of Ash as a nn.
I like Arlo because it's strong and I'm a fan of the O ending. Our Levi was almost a Leo and I think Arlo and Leo are similar in sound/feel. I've mentioned Arlo to a couple people though and I feel like it didn't get the best of reactions.. not sure why.
Would love to hear your thoughts on which name you prefer and why.

Re: Arlo vs Asher

  • I prefer Arlo. I like names that end in -o, just like you, so that's probably why I prefer it. Asher is great, but Ash is just very Pokemon to me (yes, I'm a 90's kid). What are your children's names?

  • I kind of like Arlo. Asher would be too popular for me, but it's a fine name.

  • I like Arlo better. It's less popular and I don't know, it's cool haha! May I ask what your other children's names are?

  • My other kids names are Serena and Levi. Not familiar with Ash from pokemon but I could always nix the nn if it was an issue.

  • I like them both but I prefer Asher. Arlo sounds very masculine but Asher to me just sounds happy. It's a really tough choice!

  • Love Arlo. I am not a fan of Asher at all.
  • Arlo. I'm a sucker for an -o ending name. Also I don't like Ash- or Grey- names; to dull and dreary to me.

  • Asher! I love Asher and really don't care for Arlo. Obviously I'm in the minority
  • I love Arlo. It was in my top 2 boy names, but we're having another girl. Its strong, yet different without being weird. Asher is really pretty too, though. Both are nice names :)

  • I love Arlo!  Asher is nice enough, but more popular than I prefer.
  • I like Asher. Arlo is also good but it's just nms

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I love Arlo but I like Asher. You can't go wrong either way in my opinion but I give a slight edge to Arlo.

  • Asher for me. I have a very horrible association with the name Arlo.

  • I like both equally but feel Arlo goes so well with Levi and Serena. I think that would be icing on your kids name cake! :D

  • I know a dog named Arlo so my vote is Asher.  Arlo isn't a bad name, though.

I like Asher. I also think it goes a lot better with your other kids' names, especially with Levi and Asher both being awesome Old Testament names.
    I LOVE Leo. :)
I'm not wild about Arlo. It sounds kind of pretentious to me for some reason.

Interesting that others know a lot of Ashers. I know a Samuel Asher but I know a ton of little kids and none of them with Asher as a first name. It's #104 nationally so I wouldn't consider that "too popular" at all. They both seem to be climbing fast though; Arlo jumped over 200 spots from 2011 to 2013 after breaking into the top 1000. It'll be interesting to see if it keeps rising or levels off.

  • Asher has my vote. Ash as a nn isn't bad IMO, even with the Pokemon connection.

Arlo sounds too harsh for me.

  • Asher is on our short list so I vote Asher! :) Arlo is nice but reads girl to me (even though it sounds strong and masculine), I think because it reminds me of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's daughter Harlow Winter Kate, not that a celebrity association is a reason to veto obv. Heck Maddox would be on my short list if DH would oblige (guilty pleasure) ;)

    Good luck!

  • Personally, I love Asher... but I'm biased because my little guy is Asher.
But, I really love the name Arlo too. I never thought of that one. It wouldn't have flowed with our last name though. but I do like it.

I've never heard Asher before...at least until we named our guy Asher. I think both go well with Levi (Levi was our second name choice...love it!).

I think no matter what you choose, you have two great name options. You'll always get people who don't like one name or the other.... and you have to not let that bother you.

Good luck for a healthy baby boy!
