Asthma?

So my husband brought DS to the doctor because he's had a cold and has been coughing for two weeks. I was expecting either antibiotics for pneumonia etc. or to be told it'll go away on it's own. Instead my husband says the PA thought he might have asthma and gave us a nebulizer and albuterol. I'm kicking myself for not being there and I have so many questions.  We have a follow up on Tuesday to see if the treatments are helping. Google is not helpful. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Asthma?

  • I had very bad asthma as a child. I didn't cough with it though. It was a wheeze when I inhaled and I was very clearly struggling to breathe. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • I cough when I can't breath, wheezing only with certain attacks. It's possible your LO has some irritation from the cold so they treat it like asthma.

  • My brother had sever asthma as a baby and I can't recall him coughing excessively.  His biggest problem was a very obvious wheeze (I mean OBVIOUS) in the chest and struggling to draw a full breath.  It seemed to be worse at night, when he was lying down.  This is true for adult asthma too.

My son coughs too- but I'm pretty sure it's teething drool.

  • I'm kicking myself for not going to this appointment. The cough is why we made the appointment but I guess the PA was worried about his breathing, I guess he was breathing pretty fast? I've never heard him really wheeze.
