Shipping milk on dry ice?

TTM about shipping milk home on dry ice while you're traveling. I've got a 7 day trip coming up in about a month. Have enough in my stash to last while I'm gone, but it'll basically be depleted.

Has anyone shipped on ice? Logistically, what's involved? How much did it cost? My corp lactation consultant wasn't too helpful outside of "the hotel concierge can help you ship".

In reviewing past threads, it looks like some of you have carried on massive amounts of milk. Is this a better route? I'd honestly never thought about trying to carry on 200+ oz of milk...stupid question, but did the airline count your cooler as a carry on item?

Eta another dumb question: what did you do with milk at the hotel? Kellymom says 3-8 days in the fridge, so I might be pushing it by keeping it all in the mini fridge.
Have you ever asked a hotel to store in a freezer? How open were they to that idea?

  • I've never done it, but you might have the best luck calling to shipping places near where you will be to ask them about it.  I wouldn't rely on the hotel concierge as they may know nothing at all.  As far as milk in the hotel, I've done that and it's been fine. I've always abided by the 8 days in the fridge rule and never had a problem.  If you will be there for a week, maybe ship some home at the halfway point if someone will be home to get it and freeze it and you find a good shipping company.  I wouldn't freeze at the hotel as I'd imagine it would be pretty thawed by the time you get home and re-freezing should be avoided.
