Plugged duct

I am nursing DS2 who is 3 weeks old. I feel like I have had a plugged duct for a few days so I have been feeding often on that side. I don't know but I have a spot of tenderness but no specific place of hardness. Can this be a plugged duct and if so what can I do for it ?

Re: Plugged duct

  • Do you think it could be from massaging too hard? When I had plugs I noticed the tenderness was worse because I'd be massaging it so much.

  • I doubt it because I noticed the tenderness before starting to massage it.

  • If it's in one spot (the tenderness) it could definitely be a clogged duct.  I would put some heat on it, like a hot wet washcloth and cup your hand around your breast at the rib cage and push forward as LO nurses.  This will hopefully clear it.

  • I find that my clogs stay sore and red for a day or two after they unclog and the hardness disappears. My MW said this is normal.

  • after a terrible experience with my first that need up in mastitis i religiously use  my silverette silver cups that are supposed to prevent not only soreness but also plugged duct and infections! but if you start seeing a red spot or start having fever call your doctor!!
