Retroverted Uterus

So I found out from my appointment with my new OB that my uterus is backwards, no one has ever told me this before. I'm wondering if anyone else has a backwards uterus and how your pregnancy was. The only thing I know is that as the baby grows my uterus will move into the normal position... guess that explains why I get cramps? Any one have experience with this?

Re: Retroverted Uterus

  • Yep mine is and so is my moms. Its a common thing actually.

  • I do but as I think about it I have no idea what it means for me aside from my uterus is tipped more towards the backend. My OB has never mentioned it or given any indication of it affecting my pregnancy. I should look it up though.

  • Yeah I do. My dr has had a hard time finding the heartbeat so Ive gotten a few extra ultrasounds. But thats the only thing that has been any different.
  • Mines tilted and my ob says there wont be any problems when I give birth! It's real common. My twin and my mom have a tilted uterus!
  • I found great information on it (yes, I immediately Google this). It's from a reputable source too. Here's the link if you're interested: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001506.htm

  • I also have a tilted uterus and think it's funny that I didn't find out until my second pregnancy. Everything went normal with both pregnancies and I guess it's more common than we think
  • A friend has this and claims its why she doesn't look pregnant at all so far.
  • Mine is also tilted. Nbd.

  • Mine is tilted too. I had IUIs with my son, which were SO painful because the doctor couldn't get the catheter through my cervix because of the angle. They used something called the "foley balloon" method instead (basically, shoot the sperm through the opening and then inflate a little balloon to push it to the top of the uterus lol).  Anyway I was told the same, ie. that it will straighten as your baby grows and it won't affect delivery - and it didn't.  Honestly at that point the baby is so big, the angle doesn't matter, s/he is going to find their way out. lol  :)

  • My OB told me the same exact thing! Out of the blue she said, "Oh, did I ever mention in your last appointment that your uterus is backward?" I was like ummmm what the hell does that mean?! And she just acted like it was no big deal and went on with the appt. I thought I heard her wrong, but now I know I'm not crazy and I plan on bringing it up again at my next appt! So glad you posted this!!!!!!!
  • I have a tilted uterus as well. It takes longer to be able to hear the baby's heartbeat with Doppler so I typically get an extra ultrasound, but that's about it. With DS I read that you can have more back labor but I didn't have that.
  • Mine too. My midwife said it all works it self out when I give birth so it won't be an issue.

  • Thank y'all so much!! I was a little nervous even though my ob didn't act like anything was wrong
  • Yep! Tilted uterus up in here. I was nervous at first too but quickly found out just how common it is. Shouldn't cause any problems.

It's not backwards, it tilted back. I have one as well (last time and time time). Fun fact, pregnancy can actually "fix" it and you can also end up with a tilted uterus after a pregnancy even if you didn't have one before. Unfortunately mine didn't fix itself so I had a retroverted uterus both times. The only "consequces" I've had is that neither the OB nor I could find the heartbeats on the Doppler before about 16w last time and not so far this time (15w this weekend). I also did IUIs and IVF and never had problems with either even though I have a retroverted uterus.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • It's not backwards.  It's just tipped posteriorly meaning that the top portion is pointed more towards your back.  The standard presentation is slightly tipped toward the bladder.  It does not cause any complications with pregnancy or delivery.

  • Oh and once I misspoke and said "inverted" instead of "retroverted" and my midwife was very quick to correct me, definitely not the same!
Yeah, that would mean either your uterus is turned inside out or upside down:)

  • Good to know lots of other ladies have this! My mother birthed 3 children perfectly fine with same retroverted issue!
