Pregnant after IF

HCG and multiples & Progesterone #

Hi ladies,

I have read that your HCG doesn't relate directly to multiples, but some seem to think that a higher HCG more directly relates to having twins. My 21dpiui HCG was 4,210, which was a jump from 18dpiui at 1,297. I am going on Tuesday for an ultrasound, and will be almost 6 weeks at that time. What are they looking for during the early ultrasounds?

Also, my progesterone went down from 38 to 27- ugh. My nurse said it was no big deal, but it does have me worried. I am still on Crinone daily, she said that 27 is very normal, but it should be going up, not down, right?

Thanks!!
Shannon

Congrats on your pregnancy...your progesterone can fluctuate a few points so I wouldn't worry about it...

Only an ultrasound can tell if you are having twins...  I had high beta #'s  and transferred two embryos ans still didn't know I was having twins until then.

  • First of all congrats on the nice betas! With DS mine was 1,069 @18 DPO. It was over 2,000@ 20DPO. I was sure it was twins, and there was only one. But I must say he is pretty spectacular.

With the twins I'm currently pg with, I requested my beta early @ 10 DPO because I have a positive HPT. Well my beta was 14, exactly 48 hrs later it was 99. I had a doubling time of 17 hrs, so pretty fast. So this time I was positive that it was just one. We got one before, theres one this time. Well I was wrong, Im 6 months with twins.

  • I think doubling time is a better indicator for multiples. If it doubles quickly enough at a higher #, there's a good chance u have more than 1. For example, with this pregnancy 17dpo I had a hcg of 1433. 19dpo it was 3726 with a doubling time of about 35 hours. 1st us showed twins.

    ***lurking...too scared to intro***

I think the doubling time (calculator here) is more informative than the level, but I think that still only tells you so much. My first IVF BFP was at ~650, although I can't remember what day it was anymore, and it was only one baby (didn't stick around). Maybe 16dp ER? This last time my HCG was a whopping 24 at 9dp6dft, and I cried for 2 days thinking it was a chemical. Well they just saw two clear sacs. My doubling times have ranged from 24-33 hours, so much faster than normal. Your doubling time was about 42 hours (assuming the draws were at about the same time), which is great, but doesn't seem to suggest twins from what I understand. But it's still not out of the realm of possibility.

My progesterone was also scaring me --50 then down to 30, but it just jumped up to 65. The nurse has been unconcerned the whole time.
    Good luck!

  • I'd be really curious if there was a study or something done on the probability of having more than 1 vs doubling time vs hcg level .. someone should really look into that and save us all the trouble of guessing! :)
