TTC After a Loss

Intro and A Question...living child mentioned

I used to be on the Bump Community a lot when I was pregnant with my first DS who is now almost 2. Despite my bicornuate uterus and a few scares with early contractions, I carried him almost to full term, and he was born healthy with no NICU time required. We got pregnant with twins in April of this year and then miscarried one at 7 weeks and the second at 12 weeks. We were not TTC at the time, but the loss was still devastating, as I'm sure you all know. Our plan now is to wait until I've had three normal cycles as recommended by doctor/midwife and try again.

So here's my question. I had a D&C to remove the second baby from my uterus on June 3. I then had a normal period (although, to be honest I hadn't had a period since my son was conceived, so I don't know what normal would be...it was similar to the ones I remember from almost three years ago) that began on July 10. Then,I spotted, but never really had a period, on August 12. I used a panty liner because I expected it to get heavier, but it didn't - so I probably didn't really need one. The spotting stopped within a few hours, and now I am super crampy, sore boobies, bloated, and mean. I'm NOT pregnant - we didn't have sex when I was ovulating (unless I missed it...I was just checking CM) and we pulled out when I wasn't just in case. Plus...I have a stack of BFN's to prove it. Well...one is positive but it was a cheap blue dye and the control line was smeared so I don't trust it against the six negatives.

So - any idea what is going on? Did I have an anovulatory cycle maybe? I had EWCM, but not much. If so, does it count as one of my three normal cycles? Is there another reason someone would have PMS symptoms after a period? Could there have been complications with my D&C? I'm going to my midwife's office tomorrow to be tested for a UTI, but should I request to also see the doctor? I'm currently only scheduled with the PA.

In any case, I appreciate any answers I get since I'm a complete stranger to you all. I haven't been back on the boards since my son was about three months old because I found a good IRL support group...but none of them have miscarried, or if they have they don't like to talk about it. So I might be joining you ladies when the time comes to actually try. I'm sorry for all of your losses, and I hate that they are what binds us in some loose way, but I'm glad this group exists.

  • And by the way...I've googled a lot and read other message boards, too. Everything keeps saying "But you might be pregnant!" and I knew the ladies here would tell me straight. I came here because I know the ladies on the bump actually know what they're talking about. I promise I'll be back...not posting and running.

  • First of all, sorry for your losses. We would, of course, have no way of confirming or denying a pregnancy and more than Google would. I would go with the 6 BFNs. As for your period, well they tend to be really screwed up after a miscarriage. It could be breakthrough bleeding on a long cycle, it could be you still have retained tissue, it could be a hormone imbalance. I would ask to see the doctor. Good luck.

  • Thank you- and yeah...I'm going with six BFN's too. Which is good because the doctor said not to get pregnant yet. Thanks though - I guess I was asking for other ideas of what could be going on. I didn't get an U/S after the D&C but I think I had a normal period already...could retained tissue still be the culprit...I do have a bicornuate uterus (the cause of the MC). I am still breastfeeding the 2yo, so hormones is a strong possibility too. Thanks for giving me something other than 'You're probably pregnant! Keep testing!!" Ugh. BabyGaga.

  • I did read the sticky post. The only thing it says about living children is not to speak about them negatively. I'm sorry - I'll update the title, but someone might want to also update the sticky post. Or maybe I missed it.

Anyway - I asked about anovluatory because I'm just trying to figure out options for what this could be and thought that might be one. I have no idea what's going on - that was one of my guesses.

  • Thanks ladies! I really appreciate your answers - I'll update tomorrow after doctor visit in case this helps someone else.

  • this entire thread got a side eye from me. all of it.
  • The only way to detect an anovulatory cycle is through temping/charting, if you weren't doing that there's no way to know if that's what you had. But whether or not it was anovulatory doesn't really matter, the fact that your hormones are wonky and you're feeling PMS-like symptoms is extremely likely due to so many factors at play here - still BFing, having just had a couple of losses, trauma i.e. D&C - your body has been through a great deal in the last while, it's going to take some time to sort itself out and you could be having all sorts of feelings, symptoms, cramps, weird bleeding, and such for some time.  It's pretty normal for bodies/cycles to take months to normalize.

I say the following out of the deepest concern - if you are not supposed to get pregnant, you should not be having unprotected sex.  The pull out method is only truly effective if you know exactly when you ovulate and abstain then, otherwise there is always the chance of conception happening, especially if you're unsure of your ovulation time or even if you are ovulating or not.  You don't know when you're ovulating, so you shouldn't even be putting yourself in the position of an 'oopsie'.  Your health and future fertility is too important to risk because you're unwilling to use a condom or just abstain a little longer.

  • Just wanted to add, I've had mid-cycle bleeding from ovarian cysts, so that could be a possibility.
