Eating healthy!

I am super motivated today to start eating healthy all the time, not just certain meals. I want a healthy family, of course but I also want to get in a routine so when it comes time for lo to eat with us, I can be sure she is eating the food she needs. All of you meal planners or healthy eaters... how do you meal plan? It seems complicated planning out a variety of meals based off the food groups. Was it complicated at first but got easier?

Re: Eating healthy!

  • Thanks to both of you! I will try that app :)@katsmewsings‌ those allergies sound rough! I like the idea of sitting down on a saturday! I have been looking at Rachel Rays cook book and planning to make a few recipes but I need to visualize what day im making what, if that makes sense!

  • I've been trying to eat healthier since DD1 has been eating solids. I don't have my shit together enough to meal plan. I try to make sure we eat protein (meat, fish or eggs) at least once a day. And I always keep an assortment of frozen vegetables in the freezer so I can have steamed veggies with every meal even if I don't have any fresh ones in the frideg. I have a microwave steamer basket so it only takes 4min from the freezer to the table. Great when I need to fix something quick for DD

  • Thank you for the advice @lica001‌ :)
  • The crockpot is my secret weapon for meal planning and healthy eating. I love to cook but with a LO there's rarely time. I'm also dairy free and try to cut out as much processed foods as possible. Frozen veggies are a great option, I also do batch cooking where I'll do a huge batch of oatmeal for the week, a huge thing of chicken to use for ck salad or dinners and a huge batch of quinoa for the week. I divide them all up into Pyrex and it's easy to make plates/meals out of them. I'll throw in fish or bison as well sometimes.
@katsmewsings‌ I love oh she glows!!!

  • I second what @lica001‌ is doing. I really try to simplify by sitting down on Sundays and planning 5 proteins + 5 veggie sides. Then after I shop, I chop as much in advance as possible. For work lunches it's a combo of salads that live awhile in the fridge or a soup (made on Sunday) with a couple of frozen Amy's to supplement. Work snacks are chopped veggies and hummus. It's not the most exciting way to eat but I'm a planning noob and this seemed like a good way to ease into it.

  • I just found this and thought it might be helpful for lunch planning. It even includes a shopping list:

  • @yvanehtnioj‌ thank you, I will do that. I like the idea because im always busy with the baby so that will be an easy way to eat healthy!
  • Thank you @anniemore‌! So far today I've had eggs and pb toast :)
  • Since we married 4 years ago, I sit down every Sunday and plan meals for the week, generate a list, & go from there. I get a lot of recipes from Pinterest and websites like skinnytaste. A typical week will include a stir fry, a grilled meat + veggie, pasta, and something simple like brats. It's easy to make things healthier by substituting turkey for hamburger, for instance. Our menu varies a lot by the season. We don't turn the oven on in the summer, just grill & stovetop. I use the crock pot a lot but more in the winter. The nice thing about meal planning is either of us can do the cooking. I store all my recipes on evernote.

  • I will check out skinny taste!
  • We literally write out a plan before making our grocery list. In general we try to fill half our plate with veggies, limit starches like pasta, rice and bread and have protein throughout day. We also make an effort to have fish once a week and mainly drink water.

Protein throughout day: PB, almonds, hummus, cheese, tuna, occasionally cold cuts.

Neat produce that keeps us interested: beets, avocados, grape tomatoes, asparagus (we love it grilled), peppers and onions sautéed together.

    And sometimes we cheat!
  • I second the crockpot, for me, it's a quick and easy way to make a healthy and decent tasting meal. I do meal plan once a week and I love Pinterest for recipes and ideas. I also use good old crockpot cook books from my MIL. Sometimes just paging thru a book with visuals helps.
  • Haha @sticky11‌. I had chocolate zucchini bread for breakfast yesterday :/
