Ok...so I don't exactly like my job, the management loves to make us look retarded, policy changes on a whim and they love to throw us under the bus, and the people I deal with on a daily basis generally have the street smarts of a phone book...but I have been here 7 years because it's M-F 8 to 4:30 and I get to sit down all day. Plus, since we're TTC, I wanted to stay where I have plenty of leave built up so I can get paid while I'm on maternity leave again. Then we get this email today that we are going to be expanding hours and now I have to work 10-6:30 for a week every 5 weeks. One of my coworkers volunteered to take the shift completely b/c the rest of us have kids and she knows it'd be hard on us, but they won't let her. We find out 2 weeks before this is to begin, and while we are able to switch days/weeks with other coworkers, we have to make those days up within 6 weeks (so we can't get rid of all our late shifts and not work late ever). Now, childcare isn't an issue for me because I am lucky enough to have my Mom and Sister watch DD and DH can go get her on nights I'll be working late, but this really pisses me off. If I wanted to work a late shift, I would have applied for a job that had that shift. I have been working this job and this shift faithfully for 7 years and they don't give 2 shits that they're screwing us all over. So now I have to look for another job- the problem is, 1) my degree is pretty worthless in my area and 2) the job I want is very specific and I can't find anyone hiring for it around here- and I'm spoiled in that I won't work weekends or nights...so I am trolling job sites trying to find something I can tolerate that pays similarly to what I make now and won't make me miss evenings at home with my family or interfere with my seasonal job in Oct. I hate change, especially when it's forced and not a choice. Bah!
I get being frustrated, but if you look at it as you get two extra hours with DD in the morning maybe it's not as bad. Plus 6:30 isn't crazy late so you'll still get to see her before bed. It could definitely be worse.
Ooof that sux! Sorry. Hope you find something great!
Can I ask what lovely slice of corporate America this is?
I work for a non profit in TN...my dept schedules rides for people to go to dr appts and various other places...we only run 8-4:30 but the insurance rides are done 24/7..now, the insurance has their own call center, so I have no idea why we need to stay 2 hrs after we close, but this company isn't known for logical thinking or making decisions that make sense....
