Re: Have we talked about Ferguson?

  • Yes, I did just put a period there because I couldn't think of anything else to type.

  • In all fairness, our discussion was mainly about Cabelas and the mall.
  • Oh, and some conspiracy link about looting and prepping.
  • I actually came here to get more information. This is the second place I go to get info on stuff like this. I didn't find anything so thank god for tumblr, filling all my inactivist needs since 2013.

  • Go to CEP @hesterlicious.  They have a 28 page thread about it.

  • Yeah, our discussion was anemic at best.

To be truthful, I haven't followed that much of it so I can't really be relevant to any discussion.  I am waiting for Buzzfeed to do the 25 Things You Need to Know About Ferguson.

A co-worker (super reliable source, I know) told me that they put a no-fly zone over the area.  His theory is that they are doing this so news helicopters cannot capture anything the police are doing to these protesters.
The FAA placed a no fly over Ferguson.  https://time.com/3105035/ferguson-faa-no-fly-zone/  Police helicopters were reportedly shot at from the ground.

The FAA order restricts flights over the Ferguson area below 3,000 feet to first responders only, including medical and police helicopters. Private aircraft, including news helicopters, are prohibited from flying below 3,000 feet in a 3-mile radius around the town. The rule doesn’t apply to aircraft landing at or taking off from the nearby Lambert–St. Louis International Airport, a major commercial hub. The restriction is in place through August 18.

The order says the flight restrictions were put in place “to provide a safe environment for law enforcement activities.” The FAA would not elaborate further on the reason for the St. Louis County Police Department’s request. “If you want it, file a FOIA,” FAA Spokesperson Elizabeth Cory told TIME, in reference to a Freedom of Information Act request.

It will take me weeks to do 28 pages. And probably depress me. I will just know what my dash tells me and fill my brain with other, happier thoughts. And then read the posts condensed in the buzzfeed article.

Anonymous is targeting the police chief now. Hackers are my favorite.

  • That woman is not the wife of the police chief.  Just another racist fuck.

I am appalled at what is happening in Ferguson.  I'm also appalled that no one is making enough noise about this (except for the residents of Ferguson anyway).  I can't believe that this young man, a child really, was publicly executed for nothing more than not obeying an officer's demand of, "Get the fuck on the sidewalk," and nothing is being done about it.

We don't even know his name.  We don't know how many times this young man was shot and where (on his body).  The media is being attacked and peaceful protesters are being attacked.  Is this America??? I mean, for fuck's sake, this is insane.

Not only that, from what I read his body was left in the street for several hours. That's appalling and horrific.
Yes, they left his body out and uncovered for hours.  This is a report that there is video of his body being put into to back of a police SUV (not an ambulance).  Not sure if that is confirmed yet, though.  It is for sure that they left his body out for waaay too long and the residents kind of watched over.  Absolutely horrifying.

Wasn't the police chief relieved of duty,

The governor removed the entire police department and put the Missouri Highway Patrol in charge in Ferguson. Apparently things are already WAAAY better. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/14/ron-johnson-ferguson_n_5680351.html

  • They have identified the officer as a 6 year veteran.

I am not a fan of identifying him; not with the level of violence this has taken.  It doesn't really add to the transparency, imo.  Identifying him privately to the outside investigators is enough.
  • And I don't disagree with what you are saying @ColeRose.  I agree that racism has permeated this entire thing from the police response to the media coverage.  And it needs to stop.

This is just the one piece of the whole Ferguson, MO saga that is probably an unpopular opinion of mine.

  •  If the police officer was shooting out of self-defense, he should have only shot once.
No.  That is not how it works, contrary to television and movies.  They aren't going for a shoulder wound to get the guy to stop the attack and say he is sorry.*

*speaking in generalities and not the specifics of this particular shooting.  I felt the need to clarigy that.

  • The body left in the street is just...no.  You are telling me no one had a sheet in their car for crash casualties?  That's the first thing they do in fatal accidents is shield the bodies from looky loos.

You shoot to kill because if you're shooting it should be because you fear imminent danger of death /serious bodily injury. You being the cop. If (s)he is being attacked by two men in that scenario @triplea598 it should depend on how they are being attacked but there are many levels of responsive force that aren't deadly by nature, including batons, tazers, martial arts/self defense, pepper spray.
AKA- less than lethal.  It is typically not refered to as non-lethal now because even that use of force carries risk.
  • Oh and now I'm reading some of the protesters were killed?  Gah.
By the police?  Or crowd?  Or do they know yet?

  • It's hard to figure out what is truth and what is social media rumors or fiction at this point.  And then when official stories trickle out slowly like this...it makes it hard to determine what the hell is actually happening.

I have no idea what happened during the initial incident.

The police ignited the firestorm with their bungled handling and leaving the body like they did.  It wouldn't be uncommon to not disturb the body but they should have covered it.

However, looting and violence is not the answer and I really feel for the Brown family who have made it a point to ask for peace and distance themselves from the violence.

The protests and the use of force as a result of the protests seems to have spiraled out of control on both sides.

Also, STFU Rand Paul.  Stop using this as a platform for relevancy with your paranoid "they're coming to get me" bullshit.  (side rant, sorry)
Your two points (bolded) contradict each other. The reason the police had the ability to escalate this to the levels they did is because of federal surplus military equipment being sold for dirt cheap to police forces around the country, incl Ferguson. Rand Paul wants that to stop; I agree. There is no reason the majority of small town USA police forces need tanks. It's an unnecessary escalation.

What's the deal with them thinking Brown was a suspect in a robbery that same day but now saying the officer wasn't aware of this?
According to the press conference just now, the officer was in the area on a medical call.
  • Isn't this conflicting?  These are excerpts from this CNN article.  https://www.cnn.com/2014/08/15/us/missouri-teen-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Ferguson, Missouri (CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 3:25 p.m. ET]

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson told reporters Friday that "the initial contact between" Michael Brown and the police officer who fatally shot him was not related to the alleged convenience store robbery committed nearby a short time earlier.

The officer approached Brown not because of the robbery, but "because they were walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic," Jackson said.

[Original story published at 2:36 p.m. ET]

According to a timeline offered by Jackson, Wilson encountered Brown 10 minutes after the report of a robbery at a nearby convenience store.

Neither Jackson nor the documents elaborated on what happened when Wilson and Brown met up on the street. He was looking for suspects in the robbery at the time, but neither Jackson nor the documents explain why he stopped Brown.

However, according to a police report released Friday, the officer investigating the alleged robbery went to the shooting scene and matched Brown's body with images from the surveillance video.

  • I just want to point out that the protests have been peaceful for the most part.  There were instances of looting on the first night (at three locations, I believe), but none since.  The protests are peaceful; the cops have not been.

Also, the images and video of the police dismantling the press's camera equipment and tear gassing them out of there should scare the shit out of everyone.

Lastly, the ONLY person who is saying that Michael Brown tried to take the officer's weapon is the officer himself.  Multiple eye witnesses have disputed that claim.
