Cost of Uncomplicated Vaginal Birth at Seton?

Hi everyone,

I know there is a post on here from 2008 about the cost of an uncomplicated vaginal birth at Seton in Austin, but I'm wondering how costs have changed since that time. I have insurance, but it's not the greatest--we will be responsible for 20% of our bill. I'm in the process of trying to decide if I should go back to the Austin Area Birthing center to have my second child (which will cost me about $3600), or go to an in-network Seton hospital instead. If the cost of delivery is still about $12,000, then it makes sense to go to the hospital to have this baby. However, if prices have gone up drastically, then I might as well go back to AABC, where I had a great (yet expensive) experience with my first delivery. Anyone willing to share the cost of a recent uncomplicated delivery with me? I'm thinking about the main Seton on 38th or Seton NW. This info will be greatly appreciated!!!

  • So each insurance carrier negotiates their specific rates with each hospital. It's best to call the billing dept at Seaton Seaton if it's on thwir website.
  • Do what PP mentioned - I had to call to get a quote from them.  :)

  • I was originally at AABC but had to be transferred out at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia. I ended up delivery at 37 weeks at Seton main. Delivery was vaginal. I don't know entirely what uncomplicated means but here is how things went for us.

Induced Thursday morning at 7am and finally delivered vaginally on Friday evening at 10pm. I was on magnesium the whole time (not sure how much $$ that adds). We were discharged Sunday around 5pm.

Looking at my insurance app, it shows that seton billed us $25,000 for the hospital portion, of that I'm paying $2000. That doesn't include a few other things like the doctor who delivered me which was $7000 (I was billed $300) and his circumcision which was $300 and we are responsible for about $130 of it.

    Hope that helps a little.

  • I had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery at Seton in January.  My bill was $21000.  After my insurance negotiated some of the costs and paid their share, my out of pocket at the hospital was around $2600-$3000.

I am delivering at Seton and I called my insurance which is going to cover 90% (so they say). A vaginal delivery should cost us ~$1,700.

I know this isn't the topic of this post but I would love to know how ya'll felt about your experience at Seton Main. Are the rooms comfortable/clean/spacious? Did you feel like the nurses and staff are knowledgeable? Would you deliver there again?? Any input is appreciated.

  • Seton will check your insurance and send you a quote after you preregister with them, and they also offer free tours of the rooms. But you will also be get separate bills for any providers that treat you while you are there--anesthesiologist, hearing test, etc. Also the treatment they provide for your baby after delivery will be billed separately, and baby usually has their own deductible that has to be met before full coverage jumps in. We paid about $3-4K out of pocket. I delivered at Seton Main in December. My labor and delivery experience was amazing--wonderful nurses, comfortable room. Post partum room and care was terrible. The outside noise from the nurses station was really loud, so it was hard to sleep. I had to press the button for pain meds each time because they weren't bringing them on schedule. We pushed my doctor to release me the day after delivery because I knew we would be more comfortable at home. I've had several friends deliver there with mixed feedback. If we have another baby, I plan to deliver at North Austin Medical Center.
